On March 16, 2016, two-year-old Brenna Michelle Rankin passed away at her home after a battle with cancer. Next month, a banquet will help raise money for a scholarship in her name. Recently opening its doors at 215 South Fifth is Grandma’s Secondhand Palace. The store came into being after a benefit yard sale. Owner Kathy Najar explained her son, Shawn Goodman, was injured in September while he was cutting wood for personal use in the Bighorn Mountains. Recently, Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital accepted a donation from the Trinchera Blanca Foundation. The foundation, an affiliate of Louis Bacon's Moore Charitable Foundation, supports organizations committed to protecting land, wildlife and wildlife habitat. The Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department released their final call log for 2016 and installed new officers at a recent meeting. The department averaged one call every three days during 2016 for a total of 108. Among those calls were 24 responses to vehicle crashes and 29 grass fires. The grass fires totaled 1,762 acres burned during the year. Firemen also handled five structure fires and two water rescues. Thursday evening at the Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce Board Meeting, the board received an update on the city maps. These maps feature Thermopolis on one side and Hot Springs County on the other, with advertisements outlining each. The indoor track at Hot Springs County High School is available to the public for walking use between the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. If you enter the building during school hours, 8:20 a.m.-4 p.m., they do ask that you check in at the office. There may be times when student athletes are using the track. The Mineral Tax Division of the Wyoming Department of Revenue has released the estimated taxable values of oil and gas for Wyoming through Sept. 2016. Hot Springs County Assessor, Shelley Deromedi said the values are lower, however, the oil estimate looks better at the nine-month mark than it did at the six-month mark.
