The Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has been called in to investigate allegations of a use of force incident involving Hot Springs County Sheriff’s Deputies. Sheriff Jerimie Kraushaar said there is body cam and dash cam evidence from the incident that will be reviewed along with interviews of those involved. The Thermopolis Police Department is working with the Secret Service to investigate the circulation of $5 bills that have been bleached and altered to appear to be $50 bills. The bills will pass the pen marker test as they are made on real currency paper. There are also counterfeit $100 bills being circulated. CHEYENNE — Members of the Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Revenue Interim Committee rejected a bill to raise the state’s property tax during their meeting Monday in Cheyenne. The bill would have raised the tax rate on real and personal property from 9.5% to 11.5%, a jump that calculates to a roughly 20% increase in taxable property. The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at Ralph Witters Elementary has been working for many years to get a buddy bench on the playground at the school. The idea was started by Jessica Slagle, the former PTO president. With her work, along with that of RWE principal Catelyn Deromedi, former school counselor Liz Ryan, RWE secretaries and custodians, and many PTO members, the project was possible. Through the assistance of several law enforcement agencies, three pounds of methamphetamine were kept out of Thermopolis and surrounding communities on Sunday, Oct. 27. Things are starting to slow down for the season out at the Hot Springs County Airport according to FBO Nate Messenger. Now that spraying is over and most of the fishing season is at an end, Messenger said their fuel sales have dropped a bit, but they still had 116 total operations at the airport during the month of October. During their Tuesday night meeting, Thermopolis Town Council approved Town Attorney Mike Messenger to draft a change to the town’s ordinance regarding nuisance yards. Messenger explained he was approached by Nuisance Officer Ame Longwell, who has raised concerns that people who received tags designating their property as a nuisance would simply pay the current fine of $25 and not do anything to clean up their property. Monday in Hot Springs District Court, Aaron M. Munger was sentenced to 3.5 years probation and 180 days in the Hot Springs Detention Center on charges of felonious restraint and misdemeanor reckless endangerment. Prior to his sentencing, Munger pleaded guilty to the charges which were lessened from two felony counts of aggravated assault and battery. Businesses that accept $100 bills from patrons are advised to make sure they’re real, as reports have come in this past week of counterfeit $100’s being passed. The bills have also shown up in Worland and Red Lodge Montana, Police Chief Julie Mathews said. Mathews advises anyone who receives a $100 bill to check it with special pens that indicate right away if the money is fake or not.
