The Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grass fire at the Bob Milek Memorial Gun Range on Friday. Shooters at the range reported the fire when it started. Fire chief Collins reminds the public to be very careful as conditions are very dry for this time of year. The Hot Springs County School District Board of Trustees approved the contract for Superintendent Dustin Hunt through the end of school year 2022-2023 during an executive session last week. With schools having to finish online last year there has been some concern as to where our students stand academically, especially in the lower grades. At the most recent Town Council meeting on January 19, the council approved two catering permits for Shorty’s, one for Duck’s Unlimited at the fairgrounds and the other for a Kirby Creek Mercantile event. At a recent traffic stop, Thermopolis police officer Mike Mascarro made a major drug bust of a local distributor that captured around $1,000 of crystal meth. This is still an open investigation, and all allegations for those involved are still alleged. On Friday night January 15, officer Mascarro was driving southbound on South 6th Street in the area of Family Dollar and he saw a van pull out of the Paint Brush motel. Governor Mark Gordon announced a change to the state’s health orders on Thursday of last week. The change will increase the permitted size of gatherings. Gordon extended the statewide mask mandate, which he first announced in December, until Feb. 14. The order changing gathering sizes took effect on January 26 and allows indoor gatherings that incorporate social distancing and face coverings are permitted for up to 25% of capacity or 250 persons. Thermopolis 7th grade boys basketball has been hitting the court the last few weeks with the A team having a 3-2 record and the B team a 1-4 record. In the latest action, they took on Lovell last week with the A team falling 25-20. Coach Dan Webber said, “We came out playing really hard in this game and jumped up on Lovell early. Applications from those organizations need to be in at the county clerk’s office no later than February 10. The Lady Cats basketball team took a pair of losses over the weekend as they hit the road in Newcastle on Friday and Douglas on Saturday. Friday night the girls had a tough first half, struggling to take care of the basketball as Newcastle forced 22 turnovers on the night. The Bobcat varsity boys basketball team dropped a pair over the weekend, traveling to Newcastle on Friday for a 60-52 loss and on to Douglas, where they fell 80-51.
