  • Schools move to digital learning

    On Monday, Hot Springs County School District #1 (HSCSD #1) Superintendent Dustin Hunt advised parents and others the district is moving to digital learning immediately. HSCSD #1 moved to a Tier 3 digital platform beginning Tuesday, November 17 until at least December 1. Hunt said there will be no in person classes for the time being. Depending on the pandemic outlook, and the health of school staff, they will hopefully resume in person classes on Wednesday, December 2.   • State approves Hot Springs County face covering requirement

    Public Health Order 2020-3 requiring all adults within Hot Springs County, Wyoming, to wear face coverings in certain places open to the public, with exceptions, took effect on Wednesday, Nov. 18. COVID-19 cases statewide and in Hot Springs County are reportedly on the rise. Hot Springs is one of eight counties in Wyoming that recently made requests to the Wyoming Department of Health to enact local mask orders.     Wyoming regulators voted 4-1 on Nov. 10 to permit Aethon Energy to pump millions of gallons of pollutants into an underground aquifer near Shoshoni that critics say is too valuable to pollute. The Dallas investment firm argued through attorney Tom Throne that it would be uneconomic and impractical to use the 15,000-foot-deep Madison aquifer for nearby towns’ or cities’ domestic supplies.     The Cookie Jar Auction Benefits planned for two individuals have been effected by COVID-19 concerns. The benefit for Wade Milek to get a trained service dog to help with his epilepsy seizures has been moved to an online auction at Wade Milek Online Auction Benefit via Facebook.   • FFA program receives grant

    The Thermopolis FFA Chapter has received a $2,000 grant from Farm Credit Services. The funds will be used for students conducting an Agriscience Fair experiment. In order to receive funds, students filled out a grant request and submitted it to chapter advisor, Becky Martinez. Funds will be given to students this coming week to purchase items needed for their research.     Many people in Thermopolis look forward to the free Thanksgiving dinner provided at the Episcopal Church by People for People. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 restrictions this year the meal will not be happening in person.     According to Hot Springs County Clerk Rose DeSeyn, last week’s general election went smoothly. DeSeyn said the number of votes cast for this election were actually slightly down from the general election in 2016 with 2,588 votes this year compared to 2,644 actual votes in 2016.     Mac and Marilyn Vass will be hosting a B.J. Dunbar memorial and cookie jar auction benefit that includes a pulled pork dinner. The funds raised are for the purchase of a trained epileptic seizure alert dog from Medical Mutts for Wade Milek. Wade is the son of Nate and Whitney (Ferree) Milek. He was diagnosed with epilepsy at six months old. His form of epilepsy is from a chromosome duplication and is extremely hard to treat.     While small, rural farms and ranches across the country have been affected by COVID-19, the Wyoming Business Council has a plan in motion to help our local producers.
