The Bureau of Reclamation, in response to a request from the Hanover Irrigation District, has scheduled a flushing flow below Boysen Dam. “The purpose of the flushing flow below Boysen is to attempt to flush moss down river and mitigate the moss the district has at their diversion,” said Wyoming Area Manager Lyle D. Myler. Last Thursday, a fire on BLM land in the Black Willow area, near East River Road, was contained to roughly 35 to 38 acres. The fire started in rough terrain after a lightning storm hit Hot Springs County the night before. Eight government engines stayed on scene for around three days. The Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce held its July board meeting last week. During old business, Chamber CEO Meri Ann Rush said the recent Culpepper & Merriweather Circus was “fun and a long day.” There were volunteers to take tickets and Rush got to see the tent rise. On Friday, July 8, the family of Duncan Harris interred his ashes in the Nostrum family plot in the Monument Hill Cemetery located in Thermopolis. Duncan's widow, Janice Harris, helped the family gather together to celebrate his life, coming from Jackson Hole and elsewhere. Duncan comes from a long lineage of the Nostrum homesteaders in the Thermopolis and Hot Springs County areas who arrived in the late 1800s. In 1913, Hot Springs County became a county after being carved out of Fremont, then Big Horn Counties. In 2013, the local Centennial Committee offered a tree planting program to promote the centennial celebration by asking local citizens to plant a tree. CHEYENNE – The elderly population (age 65 and over) in the state grew 3.6 percent between July 2020 and July 2021, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. In comparison, Wyoming’s total population only grew 0.3 percent during the same period.
