The meeting provides and opportunity for input on how the district will use the federal funds of the consolidated grant. Hot Springs County High School students will be celebrating prom on Saturday, May 5. As it falls on Cinco de Mayo, the prom committee decided on a Cinco de Mayo theme and added some new things to the traditional rite of spring. The Grand March will be held in the auditorium this year, beginning at 7:15 p.m. To add a little grandeur to the march, a red carpet will be in place at the front of the auditorium for attendees to “walk the red carpet.” The dance will be held this year in the AG shop, beginning at 8 p.m....

This spring, our fourth graders at Ralph Witters Elementary School experienced two wonderful trips overnight in Yellowstone National Park. The first trip stayed at the YCC (Youth Conservation Corps) in Mammoth from March 9-12. The second trip stayed at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch in Lamar Valley from April 16-20. Yellowstone Park Rangers immersed the fourth graders in engaging learning experiences on ecology, geology, history, and preservation of the park. Students participated in many activities...

During an all-school assembly in the auditorium on Monday, Hot Springs County School District Number 1 announced middle school educator Aimee Kay as the Teacher of the Year. Kay has served the district's students for 23 years, currently teaching science and coaching volleyball. The Senior Class Parent Committee will host a Bingo fundraiser on Sunday, April 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Thermopolis Middle School. Two initial Bingo cards and two meals will be available for $25, with a menu of walking tacos, and additional cards are $5 each. Ralph Witters Elementary will host its Kindergarten Round-Up for the 2018-19 school year on Thursday, April 5 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the school library. To be eligible for kindergarten, students must be five years old by Sept. 15, 2018. Those bringing children to register should have an immunization record and a state-certified birth certificate. Kids can still be registered without the birth certificate, and parents are encouraged to do so, but the document must be turned into the office before the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 22....

Reading is a fundamental building block for all aspects of life, from work to play to school, and the Children’s Resource Center (CRC) in Thermopolis has made great strides in seeing that children of all ages have books to read. Among the more noticeable structures on the west side of Thermopolis Middle School is the newly added hoop house. Though built last June, teacher Becky Martinez noted she went on vacation soon after and didn't want to plant things that would simply die. This is the first season the students are planting in it. The top three from the Thermopolis Middle School spelling bee on March 2 — Josiah Butler first, Hayden Mayne second and Madeline Wagler third — traveled to Rock Springs last week to compete in the Wyoming State Spelling Bee. The state competition includes a 75-word written preliminary round and 27 rounds of oral competition. There were about 60 total participants, and after the first round they took the top 33 for the oral round. Ralph Witters Elementary will be home to the Student Music Festival on Saturday, March 24. Over 130 students will be attending, 12 of them from Thermopolis. Music teacher Mary McGillivray said the event is done through the North Big Horn Basin Music District, and area schools bring students to play in Honor Recorder, Honor Choir and Honor Movement/Drumming. Remington Ferree presents the FFA Creed during the regional competition Tuesday afternoon. Ferree tied for second in Districts, and placed fifth in Regionals. Also competing in this past week's FFA Speech events were Jeffery VanAntwerp, who places third in Extemporaneous in Districts and fourth in Regionals, and Chase White, who placed third in Prepared at Districts and fifth at Regionals.
