Spring is in the air...the time when a young lady’s heart turns to Prom! Hot Springs County High School will once again be holding their prom dress exchange, now through May 5. If you have a prom dress, or more than one, that you would like to donate to the dress exchange, please bring it to the front office at the high school. The dresses will be available for the girls to ‘shop’ for free for their perfect prom gown. Gowns, suits, shoes and accessories will all be accepted....

Although he's in some deep trouble in this shot, no one would have guessed that Remmington Ferree would slide into the number one slot at the high school's "rock, paper, scissors, splits" game last Friday. Ferree came out on top, beating out Jocelyn White for the title. Each Friday, the school does a little spirit building with competitions between the classes with different games to end their week....

Temperatures below zero didn't stop the kids at Ralph Witters Elementary from having a special camping day last week. Classrooms were filled with tents and sleeping bags and even a few fire rings and students worked on their lessons using flashlights in the darkened rooms....

Oliver Bihr is all concentration as he does a little fishing in class during a special camping day at RWE. Students spent the day doing all their class work as if they were on a big camping trip with all their friends....

Ruth Needham seems to be completely content snuggling this exotic chicken last week during the annual FFA Petting Zoo at the high school. Everyone was invited to come see the various animals which included chickens, a turkey, bunnies, turtles, a horse and a mule, sheep and goats, all available for hands-on interaction. All incoming kindergartners and their parents are invited to attend the “Tips and Tricks to Literacy” Pre-K Parent Night on Thursday, Feb. 28 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Ralph Witters Elementary. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria, followed by some time to allow incoming students to explore the rooms as well as meet their teachers and other school staff. Hot Springs County High School’s Key Club is once again doing a food drive to help the needy in our community. According to sponsor London Jenks, the drive just started, and over the next couple of weeks each of the classes will be attempting to win awards for gathering the most non-perishable food. The freshmen are currently in the lead, but Jenks indicated there are very few items so far and they are hoping to collect much, much more. It was another record breaking weekend for the Bobcat Speech and Debate Team as they traveled to Greybull for the Forensics Challenge. The speakers brought home first place for the third tournament in a row and placed second overall. “This team is dominating the circuit right now,” said coach Cindy Glasson. “Saying I’m proud of these kids doesn’t even touch the way I really feel. This past weekend, Robotics Team No. 4273, Aluminati, travelled to compete at the Utah State Championship. Coach London Jenks said the team did very well. “They were in the top five for most of the day and held the first place position multiple times,” Jenks said. “Their record was 4-1 and they had a very close match in the single match that they lost. The school recently had a class competition fundraiser for Pennies for Patients. The freshmen, who collected the least amount of money, had to be on the receiving end of pies delivered by the sophomores, who collected the most. Rehearsals have begun for the spring production by the Hot Springs County High School’s drama team. During the first week in April, they will be presenting the musical, “Pirates of Penzance,” a comic opera in two acts with music by Gilbert and Sullivan. Students in London Jenks' science class recently tried out their creations at Hellie's TeePee Pool. Jenks said they were learning about Newton's Three Laws of Motion. One of the forces they were learning about was buoyancy and they had to mathematically prove that their boats would support the weight of two individuals prior to putting their boats in the water. It was another successful weekend for the Bobcat Speech and Debate Team – one for the books as they brought home first place at the Worland “Worlando Beach” tournament. The team not only secured first place in 1A/2A, but placed second overall behind 3A Riverton. In the main office at Thermopolis Middle School there are four Ball brand jars filling with coins and bills, an appropriate label as the money inside will go toward the purchase of soccer balls for Uganda. Teacher Jacob Strenger said he had an opportunity to travel to the country to do some humanitarian work with an organization, and they like to leave soccer balls behind in the villages after they’ve worked there. It was a busy weekend for Bobcat Robotics teams No. 4273, Aluminati, and No. 7238, Fistful of Axles, both of which competed at the Wyoming State Tournament in Casper. Following the qualifying matches, Fistful of Axles placed 12th and Aluminati placed 22nd. However, following qualifying rounds the top teams pick other teams for their alliances and team HCVB selected Aluminati, with the alliance finishing in third place.
