The leaders and volunteers of Hot Springs Heritage Foundation are hard at work, putting together the annual Wyoming Discovery Days Festival. Now in its fifth year, Discovery Days is a spectacular event, which will be held this year on Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13 in Hot Springs State Park. In the nature of a “folk festival,” Discovery Days will sport live music from at least nine acts, playing at the Pavilion; story-telling; artisans; food trucks; antique farm equipment on exhibit; and a dachshund race. Nearly fifty vendors have signed...
To say that the Bobcat and Lady Cat golf teams were dominating last year, really defines the term “understatement”. The Bobcats took home a state championship in the boys division last fall, and the Lady Cats finished in second place in the girls division. To top off the fall season, senior, Hayden Overfield, brought home the championship hardware in the boys division. Cementing their dominance in class 2A golf, this past spring, both teams won their respective State Spring Championship Tournaments. On Friday, June 20, the Bobcats will hos...
Last season, the Hot Springs County High School Bobcat track team made great strides in their quest for a State Championship. With each passing event, one could see, clearly, the progress being made by all of the student athletes. In May, the team brought home a Regional Championship – the first for a Thermopolis team in many years. With a boost from their Regional Championship, the Bobcats went into the State Championships with a great deal of confidence, and managed a second place finish - behind a heavily favored team from Big Horn. Last wee...

The Thermopolis Town Council met on June 3 for their first regular meeting for the month of June. Much of the meeting was taken up with citizen participation, where local citizens appeared to voice their concerns, or their support, for allowing fireworks to be used within the Town limits on the Fourth of July. Of those who spoke in opposition to allowing fireworks, the main concern seemed to be the effect of the noise from the fireworks upon pets, the elderly, and local veterans, who may suffer from PTSD. Those who spoke in favor of allowing...
The Hot Springs County Commissioners met on June 3 for their first regular meeting in June. The commissioners were asked to approve the filing of a Satisfaction of Judgment in the District Court case in which the Tipi Retreat and its owners were ordered by the court to pay fines to the county for their violation of the county’s land use regulations. With only minimal discussion, the commissioners agreed to allow the Satisfaction of Judgment to be filed with the court. This action follows up on the commissioners determination to enter into an a...
The athletes of Hot Springs County High School put on quite a show this past school year. While it is, certainly, accurate to say it was “a banner year” – after all, some new banners will be going up in the gym – the phrase really undersells the pinnacles to which our local athletes reached this year. No matter which sport one might favor, the various teams provided an incomparable level of entertainment, and were a thrill to follow all year long. To get things rolling, the fall sports programs, made significant progress in some areas, and cont...
It is the beginning of June. a time when the weather begins to warm; clouds form to bring much appreciated moisture to lawns, gardens and fields; and old bones begin to thaw from the long winter’s cold. It is a time when the thoughts of many red blooded Americans turn to baseball. In Thermopolis, baseball fans have opportunities galore, with baseball programs for every age of enthusiast – from Start Smart Baseball for three to five year olds; T-ball for five and six year olds; Coach Pitch for seven to ten year olds; Little League for nine to...
by Daniel Powell (totteringtimes@gmail.com) There is a lot of talk in the media these days about DEI. Similarly, the subject is a cause of vociferous debate on social media. It appears, people have concluded that those are things we need to exterminate. To be honest, I always thought those were good things. I was born in the 50s, grew up in the 60s, and came of age in the 70s. In the, relatively, new public high school which I attended, my teachers were mostly recent graduates of college – just getting their start in teaching. As kids, they h...
The Bobcat and Lady Cat track teams wound up their 2025 season last weekend. The teams traveled to Casper to compete in the state championships, which were held at Harry Geldien Stadium, at Kelly Walsh High School. Following up their win at Regionals in Shoshoni the weekend before, the first Regional Championship for Hot Springs County High School in many years, the Bobcats faced a tough challenge to win at State. The team from Big Horn High School has excelled all season, and were favored to win at State. Coming into the championships, the...
In an Order issued on May 16, 2025, the United States District Court in Cheyenne dismissed a number of claims raised by Hot Springs County resident, Douglas Edwards, in a civil action filed by Edwards this past fall. Each of the individual law enforcement o...
On October 21, 2024, Douglas Edwards filed a civil rights complaint in the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming. The Court is located in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Edwards seeks damages for an alleged violation of his civil rights, which allegedly occurred on October 13, 2021, in Hot Springs County, Wyoming. Acting pro se (representing himself, without an attorney), Edwards alleges that his civil rights were violated in an encounter with officers of the Thermopolis Police Department, and deputies of the Hot Springs County...
The Hot Springs County High School Bobcats golf teams traveled to Wright last weekend, to compete in the 2A Spring Championships. With some great golf played by both the girls and the boys, both teams came away with a championship. Two falls ago, the Lady Cats won the state championship in golf for the first time, in a long time. Not to be outdone, the Bobcats won the state championship last fall, to add to their total in state championships. Needless to say, the Thermopolis golf teams have staked their claim as one of the best golf programs in...

The Bobcats and Lady Cat track teams hosted the Bobcat Invite on Friday, May 8. With the sun shining, the sky blue, and a light breeze, it was a perfect day for the event. Teams from 23 schools made the trek to Thermopolis. The grand weather and the volunteers who worked the event in numbers too many to count made the day a huge success. But the weather wasn't the only thing to shine that day. The Bobcats put up 136 team points, securing points in nearly every event in which a Bobcat was entered...

With seven teams competing in the girls events, the Lady Cats finished in third place, with a team score of 103.5 - behind Buffalo in first place and Douglas in second place. Coming off his win in Powell the week before, outstanding senior Hayden Overfield again found himself sitting atop the leader board. Overfield carded a 75, and finished the Tournament tied with Jermaine Broussard of Worland. In a score...
The Bobcats and Lady Cat track teams were in Douglas last week to compete in the Douglas Invitational. Boys and girls teams from 15 schools matched up in the day-long track and field events. Faced with competing extra-curricular interests for several team members, the Bobcats and Lady Cats were, once again, without their full compliment of competitors. As they have done all season long, however, the teams did not allow their shortage in numbers to affect their results. Putting on a remarkable performance, the Bobcats finished in first place in...
The Hot Springs County High School Bobcat Golf Teams headed to Powell on Friday, April 25 to compete in the Powell High School Spring Invite Tournament. At the end of the day, both teams finished in second place, with the Lady Cats at 298 - just four strokes back of first place Cody and the Bobcats a mere five strokes (335) behind the exceptional team from...

The Hot Springs County High School Bobcat golf teams were granted a perfect day to play their Spring tournament last Wednesday. The event had been scheduled for Thursday, however, Mother Nature had teed up some heavy, wet snow for that day so the schedule was adjusted in order to get the event in before the clouds let loose. The powder blue skies and balmy spring temperature combined to make for a very pleasant day out of the classroom, for some very fortunate high schoolers. School – s...
The Bobcats and Lady Cat track teams competed in Shoshoni on Tuesday, April 15 and both teams put in a remarkable effort. While the Bobcats finished in first place in the team standings with a combined score of 287 (more than one hundred points higher than second place Kemmerer), the Lady Cats finished second to Kemmerer, with a team score of 69. The weather and field conditions were both exceptional for an early spring event, and combined to drive the Thermopolis teams to a total of thirteen first place finishes. Robert Buckner finished first...
When it comes to statistics, the sport of track and field is not unlike the sport of baseball - in both cases, it’s all about the numbers. The Hot Springs County High School track teams traveled to Powell last week to put up numbers in the various events, all the while, fighting their own reduced numbers. It probably comes as no surprise that, in a rural community like Thermopolis, we have the benefit of a very large, and highly successful, FFA organization. Many of our high school students participate in that fine institution, and thus, l...

The Hot Springs County High School Bobcat golf teams have faced some challenges in their short spring season. Although they were to have kicked off the spring campaign in Worland on April 4, that tournament was canceled by uncooperative weather. This week, the teams were scheduled to play at home on Thursday, April 17. Once again, however, Mother Nature has refused to cooperate, and thus that tournament was moved up a day with the hope of taking advantage of some fine weather, which has been for...
The Hot Springs County High School track teams were in full swing last week with meets at Natrona County High School in Casper on Thursday and in Greybull on Saturday. In Casper, Thermopolis joined twelve other schools in a long day of track and field events. With each event overflowing with competing athletes, sometimes as many as four heats deep, the matchups were stiff, causing both Thermopolis teams to finish in the lower half of the team standings. Davdine King put in a grand effort, finishing first in the high jump and second in the 400...
