A motion to dismiss a lawsuit against the Tri-County Telephone Association (TCT) has been taken under advisement by Ninth Judicial District Court Judge Norman E. Young after a three hour long hearing in Lander on Friday, Sept. 23. The suit was filed on Dec. 28, 2015, by plaintiffs Joe and Barbara Campbell, representing themselves and similar persons against Chris Davidson, Tri-County Telephone Association, Inc. One of the new faces you'll see at Ralph Witters Elementary belongs to Ashlee Burton, one of the trio of new first grade teachers for the district. Burton comes to Thermopolis from Basin along with her husband Gerry, who is the new band director. After completing college, Burton began raising her family. Enrollment numbers for the Hot Springs County School District have remained fairly steady from last year, gaining 15 students since the end of classes this spring. First grade, fourth grade and sixth grade have each gained one student since last spring, while the seventh grade, eighth grade and junior class at the high school have each lost a single student. Tuesday evening, the Thermopolis Town Council approved the second reading of an ordinance regarding fees for construction and demolition trash and the disposal of tires. Prior to approving the second reading, the resolution was amended to include language stating an appropriate permit must be paid for in advance. On Sunday at 9:48 a.m., the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department was called out to respond to a grass fire near mile marker 8 on Highway 120. The wind driven fire involved 18 acres, along with multiple structures and equipment. The department responded with four wild land engines, two water tenders, a structure engine and 18 personnel. This week, the draft Region 6 multi-hazard disaster mitigation plan is being reviewed at the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security. A public comment period on the draft was conducted Aug. 30-Sept. 7. County Emergency Management Coordinator Bill Gordon said there was very little comment, though Jeff Brislawn, whose firm has been helping with the draft, said that is typical. Local resident, Shawn Goodman, 42, was seriously injured in a work related accident in the Big Horn Mountains on September 14. At 8:45 a.m., Goodman was cutting trees to be shipped to Oregon for a log home when one of the trees fell on him, breaking both femurs at the hip. A fellow worker from Shoshoni, Jason Kinnigy, has been commended for saving Goodman’s life, getting him as comfortable as possible before going for help. Two suspects who were pursued through Thermopolis on a stolen motorcycle have entered pleas to charges against them, though official sentencing has yet to happen in Hot Springs County Fifth Judicial District Court.
