    The Hot Springs County School District #1 Board of Trustees released the average daily absences in each of the schools during their monthly meeting Tuesday night. The data is cumulative from August through March, showing how many days of school were held in each building along with the average number of absences each building showed for the month.   • Dumas found guilty on charges

    Following about three hours of deliberation Wednesday afternoon, a jury found Darren Dumas guilty of strangulation of a household member and domestic battery. The strangulation charge is from Sept. 26, and the battery charge is from Sept. 23-26. The charges state he beat and strangled Christy Dumas.     Last week, members of the Main Street Thermopolis organization took a tour of the former Fair Deal Furniture building and two adjoining storefronts to evaluate what can be done to bring them back to life.     Hot Springs County High School's FFA program recently attended their State event in Cheyenne. One of the highlights of the trip was the "booth contest" which the team won through a combination of excellent presentation and a little help from hand-held technology. FFA member Jeffrey VanAntwerp created a Wyoming trivia quiz with an interactive program that was then plugged into a TV in the booth.   • Runoff forecast for Boysen Reservoir

    There is no change in the snowmelt runoff forecast for Boysen Reservoir between March and April. Mahonri Williams, the resources management division chief for the Bureau of Reclamation’s Wyoming area office noted the April through June runoff prediction is still 1,100,000 acre-feet (af), which is 200 percent of the 30-year averaged of 540,000 af.     An addendum to a motion for a new trial in a case against Matthew Schwan was filed March 30. Schwan was found guilty on March 15 of aggravated homicide by vehicle, in the death of Reilly Schwan. The addendum calls for a new trial because of prosecutorial misconduct. According to the document, during the trial the prosecutor was examining a witness and the witness was asked what the deceased might have said.     Budget cuts with just about everything in the country is affecting Hot Springs County as well, as shown during the county commissioners meeting on Tuesday. Nate Messenger, FBO for the Hot Springs County Airport, informed the commissioners they have been awarded the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) Department of Aeronautics grant for the annual fly-in in August.     Tuesday night, the Thermopolis Town Council looked at the water, sewer and sanitation rates. According to the financial statement of February 2017, water revenues were $932,172.44 and expenditures were $718,080.95, for an end result of $214,091.49. Taking into account a $29,455.06 payment to the drinking water SRF loan — which is the town’s match for the water line going up Broadway when the state put the new highway in — results in a total of $184,636.43.     A scam currently going around is focused on those who own property, with the scammer posing as a representative of a firm interested in buying said property. The scammer also sends along a “purchase agreement” for the land, and claims public information about the property was obtained from the Hot Springs County Assessor. A cashier’s check is offered in exchange for the property, as well as an offer to pay associated costs of the transaction such as back taxes, title and escrow fees.     A motion for a new trial and evidentiary hearing has been filed in a case against Matthew Schwan, who on March 15 was found guilty of aggravated homicide by vehicle, in the death of Reilly Schwan. The charge is from a May 14, 2016, incident, during which Matthew struck Reilly with a vehicle; that vehicle had to be lifted off Reilly at the scene.
