At 1:04 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Hot Springs County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Billie Jo Norsworthy, of a 2014 white Ford truck stolen from her residence. The vehicle was later stopped in Riverton, and it was discovered the driver, 43-year-old Christopher Mitchell of Cody, was involved in a chase leading across several counties. Thermopolis Middle School teacher Kristin Ryan was recently awarded a $2,000 Unsung Hero Grant from Voya Financial. The firm awards grants to K-12 educators nationwide in honor of their innovative teaching methods, creative educational projects and ability to positively influence their students. There was a new face at the Aug. 29 meeting of the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. Melissa Johnson was approved to fill the board position recently vacated by Breez Daniels. Boaters, fishermen and those who swim in Boysen Reservoir are asked to be aware the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has discovered a potentially harmful blue-green algae bloom on the northeast portion of the reservoir. Wyoming State Parks have had a program in place for six years that allows the different parks across the state to bring in volunteers to work in their areas for the summer season. Budget and staffing cuts across the board called for some kind of help to keep the parks in tip-top shape, so a volunteer coordinator for the state was hired in Cheyenne to gather a list of volunteers and where they would like to help out. This past Saturday, Jim Wilson received the 2017 Kurt Bucholz Conservation Award, presented by the Wyoming Stock Growers Land Trust (WSGLT) during a ceremony at Elk Mountain Ranches. Hot Springs County School District #1 Board of Trustees met Aug. 15, the last meeting before the start of the new school year. Laurie Graves, principal at Ralph Witters Elementary, gave a presentation to the board on how summer school went this year with the recent financial cutbacks. On Aug. 14, an officer spotted a vehicle pulling a trailer fail to stop at Sixth Street and Shoshoni. The officer later observed the vehicle make an unsafe/unlawful lane change, as the driver did not utilize his turn signal.
