The Town of Thermopolis has announced that the new flag pole recently installed downtown at the intersection of 5th and Broadway Streets was damaged during installation by the contractor. The original flag pole was damaged during a wind event in 2024. The new flag pole was installed in January. The Hot Springs Speech and Debate Team captured the 1A/2A Champion at the Big Horn Speech and Debate Tournament held at Big Horn High School on January 31-February 1, 2025. The Bobcats brought 15 students to compete in the tournament that hosted 10 schools including large teams from South Dakota. Hot Springs County High School senior, Kaylee Bazzle, has been a member of the Bobcat Cheer Squad since her freshman year. Each summer, the squad attends a training camp, somewhere in the state of Wyoming, to build their skills, and to take on new opportunities to excel in their sport. On January 14, Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department members voted to appoint Dale Andreen as their new Fire Chief. Previous Fire Chief Mark Collins decided to retire from the position but will still stay involved serving the public. Wyoming Highway Patrol has issued a brief press release regarding the pedestrian fatality that occurred on January 24 in Thermopolis. The release states, a pedestrian identified as Bernadine Blacketer, an 85-year-old female, was crossing the street when she was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle did not stop after the collision with Blacketer. The Town of Thermopolis installed new playground equipment at the Glade Edward’s Park located at 226 South 3rd Street, which is just east of the railroad tracks. The money to fund this new equipment came in two parts and about $33,958 came from the Glade Edward’s Foundation. The new equipment was added at the south end of the park. The Wyoming Department of Education announced that the four-year on-time high school graduation rate for schools throughout Wyoming remained relatively consistent at 81.6 percent in 2023-24, a slight increase of 0.2 percent from 81.4 percent in 2022-23. For 2023-24, Hot Springs County High School’s graduation rate is 78.7%. In 2022-23 Hot Springs County’s graduation was slightly lower, it was 78.3%. Long time Thermopolis resident Bernadine "Bernie" Blacketer was struck and killed by a vehicle being driven on Arapahoe Street last Friday morning. On January 24 around 7 a.m., Thermopolis Police officers responded to the 700 block of Arapahoe Street for the report of an 85-year-old female pedestrian who was struck by a motor vehicle.
