    The Hot Springs County Commissioners met on Tuesday afternoon and made a decision on an issue that they haven’t faced before and likely never will again – the release of the bones found in a trunk more than 20 years ago.   • Lodging tax receipts see small dip

    At the Tuesday meeting of Hot Springs Travel and Tourism, Director Amanda Moeller reported a bit lower deposit of lodging tax receipts compared to this time last fiscal year. The July deposit this fiscal year was $13,359.59, compared to $15,997.24 in July of the 2017-18 fiscal year. Moeller said the receipt report had three contributors — Town of Thermopolis, Hot Springs County and East Thermopolis.     During their meeting on Tuesday, July 3 the Thermopolis Town Council approved two town ordinances on first reading. The ordinances will go through two more readings before they are adopted.     The Hot Springs County Commissioners met last week for a short meeting before the 4th of July holiday. Nate Messenger, FBO at the airport, reports 174 total operations at the airport for the month of June, including three air ambulances and nine aircraft that spent the night. Messenger said traffic was up this month and he expects July to be even better. Avgas sales were over 2,000 gallons and nearly 800 gallons of jet fuel were sold for the month.     The Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department responded to three calls Sunday evening as lightning lit up the sky and ignited dry grasses. Chief Mark Collins reported 21 personnel responded to three fires, reported on Black Mountain Road, 12 miles west along Highway 120 and west of Wind River Canyon. Among the three fires, he noted, there were two actually sighted Thankfully, the storm also brought plenty of rain with it to help put the fires down.     The Hot Springs County Sheriff’s Office this past week did tobacco and alcohol sale compliance checks at local businesses. According to the reports, there were four compliance checks regarding sale of tobacco to underage people; of those, subjects at two different businesses were cited for selling tobacco to minors.     With temperatures increasing through last week and reaching 102 degrees Saturday and Sunday, there is plenty of dry grass in the area. The Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department responded to a small grass fire in town on the morning of July 4, but the department only saw a few small fires on the holiday.     Doug Nichols was recently named Wyoming 4-H Leader of the Year for the Northwest Area. According to a statement from 4-H Educator Joey Johnson, “Nichols has been a steadfast 4-H Leader and volunteer for the Hot Springs County 4-H Program since 2013. Doug has spent countless hours teaching archery to 4-H youth ages 8-18.     In June, Hot Springs County High School students Olivia Weyer and Akeyla Franklin attended the 33rd annual Summer High School Institute at the University of Wyoming. The two were among the 90 students selected for the program from across the state. After it was suggested they attend the program by their school counselor, the pair set to applying.     At the Southside Travel Center, the restaurant space once again is seeing life, with the opening of a Champs Chicken location. Marian Lanik explained when the owners of the previous restaurant put in notice they were going to move, she met with the building owners to determine what could go in the space. Though the animals could not immediately be located and confirmed they had Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), Game Warden Benge Brown said the county is one of the more prevalent areas for the sickness.
