According to information from the State of Wyoming Economic Analysis Division, Thermopolis saw an increase of 14 people, or 0.5 percent, from 2016 to 2017. The population estimate for July 1, 2016, was 2,916, while the 2017 estimate was 2,930. The slight increase occurred in other locations in that timeframe as well, with East Thermopolis increasing from 247 to 249, or 0.8 percent, and Kirby going from 89 to 90, or 1.1 percent. Tuesday evening, Thermopolis Town Council approved the 2018-19 fiscal year budget upon second reading with a few adjustments made, mainly to the Reserve Fund of $137,700. In Hot Springs District Court Monday Christopher Mitchell of Cody was sentenced for theft of an automobile, for a Sept. 5, 2017 incident during which he stole a truck from Billie Jo Norsworthy. Mitchell was later picked up in Riverton, and pleaded guilty to the local theft charge on March 19. Though sentenced in Hot Springs County to three to five years in prison, Mitchell is also facing charges in Park County and Washakie County. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) held a public meeting at the firehall last week to give details to the planned work on Hwy. 20 in 2020.
