After showing a decline in the 2018-19 fiscal year compared to the previous year, lodging tax receipts for Hot Springs County are off to positive start for the first couple months of the 2019-20 fiscal year, according to the financial report at Tuesday’s meeting of Hot Springs Travel and Tourism. During their Aug. 15 meeting, the Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce approved the slate of board nominees including Jana Oliver, Jen Fisher, Howie Samelson, Jen Arends and Beth Lewis. The board currently has four board members — Phil Scheel, Deb Tudor, Greg Willson and Barb Heinze — who will “term out” in October, meaning they have served two consecutive three-year terms. Ray Shaffer announced this week that the H Diamon W Camp was recently awarded a Daniels scholarship for around $200,000. Shaffer is looking to promote more public use for the camp, and the money will go to renovating the camp. Plans include adding a restroom and new — not used — appliances. Staff and residents alike at the Wyoming Pioneer Home are breathing a little easier after last week’s visit by the new director of the Wyoming Department of Health, Michael Ceballos. On Friday, Aug. 2, Raymond W. DeVries Sr was fined a total $600, $100 for each of five misdemeanor counts of theft under $1,000 and one count of misdemeanor criminal trespassing. The charges come from an Aug. 30, 2018 incident, where DeVries brought a truck and forklift onto the property of Linsey Brooks with the purpose of taking five large landscaping rocks. Judge Bobbi Overfield has sentenced Hollie Smith to three years of supervised probation for conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance, methamphetamine. Though sentenced to three to five years in prison, that term was suspended. Smith had pleaded guilty to the charge, and a second count of unlawful possession of meth was dismissed. The 2019 Junior Livestock Auction at the Hot Springs County Fairgrounds on Friday night was a success, with total sales amounting to $123,146. Along with sheep, swine and beef, there were lots of baked good that went on the auction block, too, from cookies to cakes and even coffee. Council approved Resolution 555, which amends Ordinance No. 841 to raise the base rate from $18 to $18.90 per month for all in-town and out of town users for each single unit and per single unit in a multiple unit.
