The Thermopolis Bobcat Speech and Debate team had a stellar weekend at the Jackson Invitational, coming home with first place in 1A-2A. On Feb. 4th the High School Jazz Band, also known as The Jazz Cat Big Band performed at the Kinser Jazz Festival at Casper College. The band had two clinics after their performance with Dr. Scott Turpen from the University of Wyoming and Dr. Lynn Baker from the Lamont School of Music at Denver University. This past weekend, Robotics teams No. 4273, Aluminati, and No. 7238, Fistful of Axles, competed at the Montana State Championship in Bozeman. Coach London Jenks said both teams experienced some robot problems — some mechanical, some programming — but the older students team, Aluminati, came away with a 3-2 record and 18th place and the younger Axles team had a 2-3 record and placed 24th. The Challenge of the Books was held at the armory last Wednesday with students from Thermopolis Middle School taking fifth with their record and third with their points. Challenge of the Books is a contest for middle school students who love to read and they are expecting to host about seven other schools for the competition. A list of 12 books, which come from the Soaring Eagle and Indian Paintbrush nominee lists, are given to the children to read each August. There are a couple upcoming opportunities to help provide for the Class of 2019’s graduation party. A walking taco dinner and dessert auction is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 27 at the VFS. Dinner will begin at 5 p.m., and there is Bingo following at 6 p.m. For two dinners, the cost is $20. Any extra meals are $5, and extra Bingo cards are $5. The Bobcat Speech and Debate team came home from their first tournament at Kelly Walsh High School with a third place win in 1A2A. Two-thirds of the team moved from preliminary rounds to semi-finals on Saturday with Kyle Mosser making finals in Drama, bringing home a fifth place finish. Hot Springs County High School’s speech team hosted the Bobcat Invitational Speech and Debate tournament last Saturday with nearly 200 students from across the state attending.
