  • Drama club brings home a first from state

    The Hot Springs County High School Drama Club had an amazing weekend at State Drama in Casper last week. "They worked so hard and I received so many comments about how talented, respectful, compassionate, and responsible my students were," said Drama coach Mary McGillivray. The one act play "Flowers for Algernon" took first place in the Proscenium category over all schools in the category.   • Closure, delays set for WRC highway

    A two-hour closure of U.S. 20/Wyoming 789 on Thursday, Dec. 7, in Wind River Canyon is intended to help a contractor successfully and safely bring a large rock off the canyon wall to the edge of the highway. Wyoming Department of Transportation geologists have determined that the large rock needs to be removed from the rock wall prior to winter near the Fremont-Hot Springs county line.   • Council approves franchise agreements

    Tuesday evening, Thermopolis Town Council approved new franchise agreements with RT Communications and Wyoming Gas. The agreements are for 10 years, and each franchise saw an increase in the percentage they pay to the town. While previous agreements saw both utilities paying two percent of their gross revenue, under the new agreements RT will pay five percent and Wyoming Gas will pay 3.5 percent.     Sheriff's Deputy Jerimie Kraushaar and Emergency Management Coordinator Bill Gordon unwrap a rough-legged hawk they rescued from the side of the road north of town. Gordon had seen the bird and turned around to check on it, noticing it didn't fly away as he approached. He and Kraushaar nabbed the bird in a blanket and it was transported to a local vet before being taken to Cody for rehabilitation.     The 18-year old son of a local teacher has been missing since November 29. Kyle Ryan Burton, son of Ralph Witters Elementary teacher Ashlee Burton and her husband, Gerry, was last seen in the River Heights/Logan, Utah area. It is believed he may be hiking back to his home in Lovell, but left without a coat or his cell phone. He likes the outdoors and camping. Burton stands 5’10” with brown hair and blue eyes.     Betty June Hawkins, 78, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, at her home in Thermopolis after a short bout of pancreatic cancer. Born June 2, 1939, in Lewiston, Ill., she was the daughter of Clyde and Myrtle (Cluney) Pomeroy. After high school she attended college earning her RN degree. Adventuresome, she headed to Wyoming and accepted a job at the Thermopolis Hospital. She then was employed by Dr. Benjamin Gitlitz until his untimely death.     Larry C. Larson, 80, passed away Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at his residence in Thermopolis after a lengthy illness. Born October 6, 1937, in Newcastle, Wyo., he was the son of Lawrence and Goldie (Harrod) Larson. After high school he joined the US Navy in January of 1957, serving until 1959. On November 4, 1960, he married Jo Ann McNett in Chadron, Neb. The couple raised two sons. Larry's occupation as an electrical lineman included living in Nebraska, Montana, and Wyoming.     F.D. Allen, 82, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at his residence in Hot Springs County. Born March 22, 1935, in Wheeler, Mich., he was one of five children of Chet and Bernice (Spiece) Allen. On July 4, 1953 he married Norma Feltman in St. Louis, Mich. The couple lived in Michigan raising their five children. F.D. was a heavy equipment operator for Operating Engineers in Michigan until retirement in 1982.
