The Hot Springs County High School Bobcats are back at school and that means fall sports are gearing up. The Cats compete in football, golf, volleyball and cross-country in the fall season and the teams are looking to build on gains made last year.
Volleyball
New varsity head coach Kylie Corpening will take the reins for the Lady Cats volleyball team. Corpening will be guiding a number of players whom she has coached throughout their middle school careers. With a heavily loaded team of seniors, the team has a wealth of skill, talent and experience returning to the court this season.
Coach Corpening said, “In just one week of practice, the girls have already made some huge improvements in their approach to defense. They are an amazing group of players and already I am really proud of them.”
The Lady Cats will travel to Lander this week, for a two-day event on August 29 and 30, and will then be at home the following week, to battle Worland on September 5.
Cross Country
In cross country, head coach Stephanie Metz, will have a returning State Champion in Jadeth Elder to lead the team. Jadeth is a senior this year and will be looking to repeat his outstanding performance from a year ago.
While the team has worked its way through the learning curve of a young team the past two years, this season will bring a wealth of experience in the form of four seniors and four juniors leading their younger teammates. The team will travel to Cheyenne this week for the State Championship Preview on Friday, August 30 and will then head to Buffalo to compete on September 5.
Football
Last fall, coach Boone Bowker led the varsity Bobcat football team to their first winning season record since 2013. The Cats were 5 and 3 over-all last year, and went 4 and 3 in their division – finishing in fifth place in the West Conference, just a tie-breaker behind fourth place Worland. Missing the play-offs by just a tie breaker was a bitter pill last year, and will serve as great motivation to make even further gains in production this year.
The Bobcats will open the season in Buffalo against Newcastle on Friday, August 29 and will then face a second away game in as many weeks playing Tongue River on September 5.
