Sliding into oncoming traffic

An interesting question came up recently about the weather in Thermopolis. “Did we have more snow when you were a kid than we have now?”

I would have to say yes, even taking into consideration that I’m taller than I was as a kid (OK, not by much), I remember huge amounts of snow.

For us, snow generally started at Halloween requiring us to have costumes several sizes larger in order to fit over our snow suits. It stayed, sometimes until Easter.

I even remember a snow storm in June during Wildcat Band. Being the tough Wyoming kids we were, Bill Malloy still had us out on the football field marching “8 to the 5” at 7 a.m. I’m sure we whined under our breath, but we still did it.

Warren hill was used for sledding then as it is now, and we could sled all winter.

At that time, the road closed sign was a metal sawhorse with a metal “Road Closed” sign attached to it that sat at the bottom of the hill.

On the weekends, the hill was filled with sledders and plenty of snowball fights.

To this day I remember an afternoon of sledding with my best friend. Here we were, a couple of kids on a sled, flying down the hill at breakneck speed as only chubby kids can.

Metal sawhorse at the bottom of the hill.

Sled getting closer to said sawhorse.

Two fat kids leaning back as far as we could as we slid under the sawhorse, missing scraping our noses on the sign attached to it by a hair’s breadth and sliding out into the oncoming traffic.

Who knew you could steer a sled?

So yes, I believe we had a lot more snow and a lot less wind than we have now. Oh, and kids? You actually can steer a sled out of harm’s way.
