Lutheran Reformation anniversary

On October 31, 1517, in Wittenberg, Germany, Martin Luther posted his thoughts about some theological topics and the practices of the Church. That simple action began the Reformation — a movement that changed Western society.

Everyone is invited to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

In celebration, there will be a dedication of the new cross memorial, a German dinner, Lutheran beverages, hayrides, an bounce house and games with plenty of fun for the entire family.

The celebration will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 4 – 6 p.m. at the church, 288 Hwy. 20 South.

In 1946, the Northern Nebraska District sent Paul Spitz to explore the area to begin a possible congregation, and started holding worship services that fall, using the American Legion Hall as a chapel.

In June, 1948, construction on a new church and parsonage began at a cost of $20,000. The original church building and parsonage are on the corner of Seventh and Broadway, but are now a private residence.

A new parsonage on 11th Street was built in 1957 by contractor and church member Lynn Shelp. It is through donations from Shelp’s family the new cross memorial was erected at the new church on Hwy. 20 South.
