Young Lady Cats finish regular season games with 8-7 record

The freshman/sophomore Lady Cats basketball team finished their regular season with an 8-7 record for the year.

The past two weeks have seen them 2-2, winning against Wheatland (44-31) as well as school rivals, Worland (42-27). They had a tough loss to Torrington (45-50) and finished things up with a loss to a talented Buffalo team on Saturday, 21-49.

Ashley McPhie led the girls in scoring against Wheatland with 14 points.

Coach Ernie Mecca said the team had their most balanced scoring effort of the season against Torrington, with three girls racking up double figures.

Aspen Jensen led the field with 14 points, McPhie had an impressive 13 and Kelly Johnson added 11 to the final score.

That performance continued the next week as the Lady Cats avenged an early season loss to Worland.

Johnson led the pack, scoring 12 points, with Jensen and McPhie adding another 10 points each.

“This is a testimony of how well all of the players on this young team have developed since the change in their roster after the first weekend in January when McKenna (Bomengen) and Sesi (Jensen) were moved up after earning varsity positions,” Mecca said. “Their absence gave the other girls the opportunity to step up, take on new roles and ultimately improve their game. Every player has become better.”

Mecca added that when roles change everyone gets better if they accept and embrace their roles.

“The competitiveness in the varsity practices greatly increased after the role changes and the varsity players and team has improved as well,” he said.

The freshman girls will not have another game until the freshman tournament in Worland on Feb. 25.

“Only freshmen can participate in that tournament,” Mecca said, “so we’ll go with a small squad of six, but possibly all eight freshmen, depending on the JV/varsity game situation in Newcastle the same day.”
