TMS students harvest potatoes

Last spring, Becky Martinez and her middle school career and technical class planted potatoes in a small plot near the school.

On Friday, the potatoes were dug up, cleaned off, and moved into the classroom to be weighed.

Each of the students in Martinez' class made a guess as to the weight of their crop before doing the actual weighing, with the student closest to the mark receiving a prize.

One hundred-nineteen pounds of potatoes were pulled from the ground. The crop will be used by the middle school lunch ladies, served up to all the students to show just how many people can be fed from a single plot of land.

Previously, the class had gone to Hessenthaler Farms to gather corn, which was also served to the students for lunch.

This week, the class gets a special trip to the Circle J orchard in Ten Sleep, where they will be picking their own apples, again to be used as part of the school lunch program.

With the apples, students will be researching different recipes that use apples, adding some technology to the process.
