Bobcat track teams split meets - home Friday

The Thermopolis Bobcat track teams were split this past weekend with some going to the Track Classic in Casper, while others traveled to Meeteetse for their invitational.

Three athletes went to Casper for what was formerly the Meet of Champions, Choc Maddock, Jules Ward and Hudson Roling.

According to head coach Ernie Mecca, the trio competed very well at the prestigious meet.

“We had four athletes qualify which is a great thing,” Mecca said.

Ward scored 11 points at the Classic, placing second in the 3200M and setting a new school record with a time of 11:49.84. The previous record belonged to Crystal Hostetter from 2001 with a time of 12:05.21.

Ward also placed sixth in the 800M with a time of 2:25.55, just 1.55 seconds off Hostetter’s 800M record.

Maddock scored three points, placing sixth in the 400M with a new personal record time of 51.44 seconds. He is closing in on John Ridenour’s 1972 school record of 50.70.

Roling placed ninth at the Classic in the 1600M with a time of 4:53.05.

Tyler Cornwell also qualified for the meet in the long jump, but chose to compete in Meeteetse instead since this was his first weekend of competition since coming off a hamstring injury.

In Meeteetse, the girls finished third as a team.

“Zoe Stehlin had one of her best meets of the year,” Mecca said.

Mecca said between her great performance and everyone else stepping up, the team was able to take a top place. He added that if the team hadn’t been short a girl who went to the Meet of Champions, they may have placed higher.

The boy’s team finished in fourth place, but Mecca said they could have done better.

“They may have won that meet,” he said.

With Roling and Maddock at the Meet of Champions, the team was down two of their bigger point gainers. The 4x100M team had a bad handoff during their race and they were disqualified despite a good lead on the competition.

“It’s just a matter of the boys had a chance to win it and had bad luck in one exchange,” Mecca said.

Mecca also pointed out that the team benefited from Tyler Cornwell returning from a hamstring injury that had kept him from competing for a while.

The Cats home meet is Friday starting at 1 p.m.
