The general feeling was that with...

I recently had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with three local ladies talking about the roaring days of Kirby, a small community about 13 miles north of Thermopolis. The Skoric sisters, Dorothy and Ellen, and local historian Dorothy Milek, had plenty of stories about the early days when Kirby was growing at a rapid pace, the characters who lived there and the simple, yet wonderful, life growing up in the midst of it all. John Nelson bought the land where Kirby stands in 1904. His...

Visitors to Wyoming State Archeological Site Legend Rock will be happy to see a smiling face when they arrive at the visitor's center; though for returning visitors, the face should be familiar. During Tuesday’s Hot Springs County Commissioners meeting, emergency management coordinator Bill Gordon told the commissioners, in spite of the issues we faced, Hot Springs County really skirted a lot of disaster this spring. Gordon is now asking county residents to really assess their situation and make the changes necessary to eliminate future hazards. For example, Gordon said if you live near the river and were concerned about the rising water, perhaps you should think now about building a b...

When most of us think of a "red card" we automatically think "stop" or "pink slip", neither of which is a good thing. For one young man from Hot Springs County though, that "red card" was a very good thing. Harley Rhodes, a 2014 graduate of Hot Springs County High School, recently tried out for "The Voice" in Oklahoma City. "I really just did it for the fun of it," Rhodes said. He had heard about the auditions from a friend and decided to go for it. "It was different than I expected," he said....

Judge Rick Kempa, of Rock Springs, author of two books of poems and editor of a third, had this to say about her work: “’Braiding Rugs’ is an intimate account of a grandmother “ripping the canniballed cloth” of her family’s “former glory”—clothing, one imagines, that has lain for decades in the cedar chest—an acti...
