The future of Hot Springs State Park's Star Plunge may be in jeopardy, according to Star Plunge owner Roland Luehne. "With the new master plan that came out, they have every intention in the world to eliminate this facility," Luehne said. Luehne said the Star Plunge has been in the park for over 100 years, opening in 1900. His family has owned the establishment going on 42 years. Recently, Hot Springs County partnered with WyT2/LTAP, the local tech transfer through the engineering department at University of Wyoming. Road and Bridge Supervisor Dave Schlager explained a study was done to establish some engineered speed limits on area roads. Through the study, Schlager said, it was determined East Sunnyside will remain with a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour (mph). A third baby buffalo was born on April 28 in the Hot Springs State Park buffalo herd. She was named Mia after Mia Thermopolis from "The Princess Diaries." Mia must be bottle-fed because her mother was a first time mother who left her out in the pasture. This is not something that happens all of the time, but it does happen on occasion according to Jody Lange, the Hot Springs State Park Trades Technician. An emergency rock scaling project will focus on removal of 6-7 large rocks from a hillside above U.S. 20/Wyoming 789 and is scheduled to begin as soon as Thursday, May 5 in Wind River Canyon. Gene Smith turned 98 on Monday and he has been walking around Hot Springs State Park for 25 years. "It's the best place in the world to walk," Smith said. The Hot Springs County seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.6 percent in February to 5.2 percent in March according to data from the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services. A year ago in March the unemployment rate in the county was 4.7 percent. In March there were 122 people unemployed in the county, down from 131 in February. The total labor force in HSC went up from 2,342 in February to 2,347 in March. In March of 2015 the labor force in HSC was 2,405.
