  • Council approves second reading of landfill ordinance

    Tuesday evening, the Thermopolis Town Council approved the second reading of an ordinance regarding fees for construction and demolition trash and the disposal of tires. Prior to approving the second reading, the resolution was amended to include language stating an appropriate permit must be paid for in advance.     On Sunday at 9:48 a.m., the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department was called out to respond to a grass fire near mile marker 8 on Highway 120. The wind driven fire involved 18 acres, along with multiple structures and equipment. The department responded with four wild land engines, two water tenders, a structure engine and 18 personnel.     Darlene Doak, a traveling nurse currently working in Thermopolis, has submitted her artistic quilt in the Row by Row quilt contest and it is on display at Gooseberry Garden Quilt Shop.     This week, the draft Region 6 multi-hazard disaster mitigation plan is being reviewed at the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security. A public comment period on the draft was conducted Aug. 30-Sept. 7. County Emergency Management Coordinator Bill Gordon said there was very little comment, though Jeff Brislawn, whose firm has been helping with the draft, said that is typical.     Hot Springs County resident Ralph Joseph “Joe” Campbell has been named as a 2016 inductee into the Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame (WCHF).     Local resident, Shawn Goodman, 42, was seriously injured in a work related accident in the Big Horn Mountains on September 14. At 8:45 a.m., Goodman was cutting trees to be shipped to Oregon for a log home when one of the trees fell on him, breaking both femurs at the hip. A fellow worker from Shoshoni, Jason Kinnigy, has been commended for saving Goodman’s life, getting him as comfortable as possible before going for help.     In August, Thermopolis Town Council officially passed Ordinance 843. The ordinance, which took effect Sept. 1, outlines opening and closing times for municipal parks.     Construction on the Hot Springs State Park pasture road could cause minor delays and detours for approximately the next month according to the Wyoming Department of State Parks and Natural Resources.     Hot Springs County School District #1 has made some changes to the food service program for the 2016-17 school year. The changes include a structural change moving from one food service director to three head cooks as well as using more recipes that are built from scratch to avoid feeding students processed food.
