    Hot Springs County’s jobless rate dropped from March to April, going from 4.4% in March to 3.9% in April. Statewide, unemployment rates fell in all 23 counties, however, the labor force also fell in 13 counties, suggesting that some of the people who were unemployed actually left the state or dropped out of the labor force.     A new medical clinic is being opened in Thermopolis by general surgeon, Jeffery Butte, DO, from Worland. Butte performs surgeries in Worland at Washakie Medical Center and is a physician with Banner Health Clinic in Worland.     The 34th annual WYO Quarter Horse Spring Sale, May 20 at the fairgrounds, saw buyers from 21 states. The high seller was gelding WYO Navy Blue Nick, sired by ELS Scottish Nick and raised by Bill and Carole Smith. The horse went for $29,000, to a buy from Massachusetts. The sale also saw 47 geldings, which averaged $13,477. The top 10 averaged $20,300, and the top 20 averaged $17,725.   • Motorcycle riders attend course

    This weekend saw 10 riders attend a Basic Rider Course (BRC), provided at the Wyoming Department of Transportation parking lot. TheBRC was developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, and is designed for those who have little or no riding experience, although most experienced riders will also benefit from the course.     Tuesday evening, the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees approved sending out requests for proposals to five construction firms, in regard to the large renovation and expansion project. The firms selected are Sletten, Groathouse, Erdman, Sampson and Layton; Sletten and Groathouse are out of Cody, Sampson is out of Cheyenne, and Erdman and Layton are from out-of-state.     The Thermopolis Town Council has approved the first two readings of an ordinance to make all operating hours and days uniform for all liquor licenses. The ordinance repeals town code sections 3-105 and 3-106.     Two contractors began cleaning up May rockfall inside Wind River Canyon on Monday, including stability and rockfall emergency repairs of existing canyon walls about 10 miles south of Thermopolis in the area of Big Windy Curve.     A filing for a change of plea was recently submitted in a case against Kristy Samples, who was scheduled for trial May 18 and 19 in District Court. Samples is charged with burglary, which stems from a Sept. 20 incident during which Samples allegedly stole money and notebooks from her employer after she was relieved of her duties.     Hot Springs County Assessor, Shelley Deromedi presented the abstract assessment roll for tax year 2017 to the county commissioners last week. The abstract is created using the tax rolls for the year, including agricultural lands, residential and commercial properties within the county. According to Deromedi, the total of the county’s property values, either market or productive value, amounts to $518,490,398. This creates an assessed value of $50,297,835 for 2017.     Hot Springs County Emergency Management would like to ask residents on western streams, particularly Owl Creek, to be aware the State Engineer’s Office and Bureau of Reclamation fell there is potential for very high spring snow melt runoff this year. Though a lot of snow below 9,000 feet has already melted, a large snowpack remains in the high altitude peaks at the far west end of our county.
