The Thermopolis Airport had a small hand in helping with the fires near Dubois as FBO Nate Messenger reported to the county commissioners on Tuesday that one of the planes fighting the fires fueled up at our airport. Messenger said the fuel truck the pilot was expecting was about five hours behind schedule and he needed to get on scene as quickly as possible and chose our airport to refuel before heading back to the fire. Two subjects are facing drug-related charges following a stop and subsequent search of the vehicle they were in on Sept. 30. According to court documents, a Thermopolis Police officer was notified that subjects had checked out of a hotel room and left needles behind. The officer initiated a traffic stop based on the suspicious activity, as well as the vehicle having no front license plate and two of its three taillights not working. On Monday, a federal judge ruled against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and overturned the Service’s action to remove grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem from the endangered species list. This means grizzly bears in Wyoming are now under federal management. AARP Wyoming announced Tuesday that Thermopolis resident Kay Bjorklund has been named the Andrus Award winner for the State of Wyoming. Maintenance supervisor Jere Apland reported to the school board last week on the summer maintenance his crew completed. At Ralph Witters Elementary (RWE) they finished the last of the carpet and linoleum replacement on the south end of the building. During Tuesday night’s meeting of the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, CEO Margie Molitor announced news from the USDA. The hospital had applied for a USDA loan of over $21 million for the renovation and expansion, and Molitor informed the board that the money had been approved. Hot Springs County was one of the top three counties in the state to see a significant drop in unemployment in July, dropping from 3.9 percent to 3.3 percent. Teton County saw a drop from 2.4 percent to 1.9 percent, primarily due to seasonal workers filling open positions in the leisure and hospitality industries. The Lights On Afterschool program through the Hot Springs County School District just finished an excellent 2017-2018 year and are already in full swing for another successful year. Wyoming and Hot Springs County has seen some West Nile Virus activity this season, especially equine and avian cases. Hot Springs County was one of the counties where pools which were tested were found to have positive results for mosquitoes carrying the virus.
