The Hot Springs Speech and Debate Team brought home a second straight 1A/2A Championship trophy after taking first at the Jackson Teton Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament held at Jackson Hole High School on February 2-3, 2024. At the January 18 Hot Springs County School District #1 board meeting, advisor Becky Martinez and Thermopolis Middle School’s Big Spring FFA gave a presentation during the celebrations portion. The students showed a slideshow of their activities and their trip to the FFA Nationals event. On January 26, four Thermopolis Middle School 8th grade students all won first place awards at the Powell regional science fair, each in their own categories. Local artist Barrie Lynn Bryant, of Kirby, is one of 46 artists selected to have his artwork featured during the 2024 Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition. This year's exhibit features 50 works and Bryant is one of the selected artists who will have two of his images featured. On Sunday, January, 21 at 6:16 a.m., the Thermopolis Police Department discovered a traffic accident that occurred in Hot Springs State Park causing damage to the Big Springs canal. The vehicle was removed from the small canal and the 25-year-old driver from Lander was cited by Thermopolis PD and Hot Springs State Park Rangers. For several months now, Hot Springs County Emergency Management has scheduled outdoor alert siren tests. The next scheduled test will be this Saturday, February 3 at noon. For this test, the alert siren will sound the steady tone used for weather warnings. There is another tone, the hi-lo siren, that is for total failure of Boysen Dam. Hot Springs County Assessor Daniel Webber announced that currently qualified Hot Springs County veterans or their surviving spouse should contact the Assessor’s Office by telephone to renew their Veteran’s Exemption for 2024 on their property taxes. If the applicant will be using the exemption for vehicle licensing, they will need to stop by the Assessor’s Office when they come in the courthouse to renew their registration. The Meeteetse Friends of the NRA will be hosting an NRA Wall of Guns event on Saturdday, February 3, in partnership with Discover Meeteetse, and their 16th Annual Meeteetse Ice Fishing Derby on February 3-4.
