    The Hot Springs County Track and Field kicked off last weekend, with the athletes travelling to Cody for the Yellowstone Sports Medicine Invitational.     Over 50 students from Thermopolis Middle School will compete this season in Track and Field. They've been hitting the track regularly last week and will pick things up again following spring break. Their first meet is scheduled for 9 a.m. April 7 at Burlington.   • Yarbrough receives prestigious scholarship

    Hot Springs County High School senior, Andrew Yarbrough, was recently named one of 615 students across the country that are recipients of the 2018 Horatio Alger State Scholarships. Recipients are each awarded up to $10,000 to apply toward the tuition of their selected college or university, and Yarbrough recently signed to play football at Mayville State in North Dakota.     Members of the Thermopolis Wrestling Club competed at the Maddyx Fischer Memorial Tournament in Riverton on March 24, with the team taking 11th place in folkstyle and ninth place in freestyle.   • Coaching spots open

    Several coaching positions are coming open for the 2018-2019 school year at Hot Springs County High School. The district will be searching for a new head golf coach, head girls basketball coach, head boys basketball coach, head wrestling coach and head track and field coach. As these are personnel matters, the school district is not releasing much information on the openings, however, some are due to coaches moving to other districts and resignations from coaching positions although some will retain their teaching positions.     Among the more noticeable structures on the west side of Thermopolis Middle School is the newly added hoop house. Though built last June, teacher Becky Martinez noted she went on vacation soon after and didn't want to plant things that would simply die. This is the first season the students are planting in it.     The change in leadership and structure at Hot Springs County High School has been a bit confusing and sometimes frustrating for students and parents, however, those changes have created some excellent outcomes. The most dramatic changes have come in the form of student grades. During the first semester of the 2016-2017 school year, 41% of the student body had D or F grades.     The Wyoming FFA Association has announced the recipients of the 2018 Wyoming State FFA Degree, the highest award the state can bestow on its members. A total of 194 members representing 45 Wyoming FFA chapters earned the degree. These members will receive their degrees on April 19, as part of the Wyoming FFA Convention, held in Cheyenne each year.     The top three from the Thermopolis Middle School spelling bee on March 2 — Josiah Butler first, Hayden Mayne second and Madeline Wagler third — traveled to Rock Springs last week to compete in the Wyoming State Spelling Bee. The state competition includes a 75-word written preliminary round and 27 rounds of oral competition. There were about 60 total participants, and after the first round they took the top 33 for the oral round.     Red Rock maintained its winning streak on March 21, in the eighth week of games for the Hot Springs County Rec District Adult Basketball League. The team had a 69-43 victory against Hoosier Daddy, bringing their record to 8-0 for the season. Hoosier’s record is now 1-7.
