Ahh, June - that most hospitable of seasons. When rays of sunshine, and azure skies, provide a welcoming warmth, after the dreary days of winter - and the uncertain times of spring. When the cottonwood trees have fully leaved out - and the Kentucky blue grass has assumed the enticing hue of British racing green.
These are times when a young man’s fancy turns to baseball. His thoughts morph from algebra and trigonometry, to a more applied form of mathematics - baseball statistics. Gone are the dreary lessons of government, social studies and English literature. Gone too are those pessimistic thoughts of how ever will the mystery of physics be applicable in the real world of a teenage life.
Memories of last season’s dismal end have also found their way into the chasms of unrecalled facts, and in their place are the forming hopes of a new season - a winning season. A season capped off with an over-.500 winning percentage, a .300 batting average, and a pitch count so low, as to be unfathomable.
In baseball, as in the season of summer, there is optimism - there is hope. And hope will remain throughout the coming season of America’s Past-time - right up until the final out has been recorded, and the season’s final statistics have been entered in that now rumpled scorebook - which will be either cherished or binned, depending upon the outcome of the season.
