Mother Nature decided to play nice last week - just in time for the Bobcat Invitational on Friday, May 8. With warm temps under an azure sky, it was a perfect spring day for track and field events.
More than twenty teams rolled in to Thermopolis to compete in one of the largest track meets in the State of Wyoming. School busses were observed heading into town from all directions. All competitors arrived with hope and anticipation, but the home team was ready to defend their turf.
As they had done last year, the Bobcats secured the win in the team standings - with a final team score of 101 points. The Lady Cats finished in fourth place in the girls division, totaling up 42.5 team points of their own.
Logann Farrell took first in the triple jump, with a jump of 34-3.5, and Paige Jones took first in the pole vault - clearing 8-6. Paige also finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.25. The girls 4x800 relay team of Jaydyn Boren, Aislyn Dobbins, Jakae Elder and Izzie Hetzel came in second with a time of 10:36.98.
For the Cats, Jadeth Elder ran a time of 4:44.30 in the 1600 meter run to claim a first place finish. Anthony Cheatham secured a first place in both the discus throw (157-2) and in the shot put (48-9.5).
As they have done all season, the Bobcat relay teams were fleet of foot. In the 4x400 meter relay, Cole Keller, Ammon Gevas, Zak Hastie and Jordan Garrison set a new school record time of 3:27.36. Not to be outdone, in the 1600 sprint medley, Zak Hastie, Nolan Collins, Cole Keller and Ammon Gevas set another school record, with a time of 3:38.97 - about six seconds faster than the previous record.
Cole Keller finished third in the 400 meter run, with a time of 51.65 and Nolan Collins finished third in the discus with a distance of 138-8. Stetson Moody finished third in the 300 meter hurdles (42.91) and third in the long jump (19-11.75). In the 4x800 relay, the Cats finished third, with a time of 9:01.21 with Nolan Collins, Aiden Flores, Lane Collamer and Jacoby Elder.
Cole Keller finished fourth in the triple jump, with a jump of 40-8.
With the Bobcat Invite in the rearview mirror, the regular season for track and field is complete. Now the teams move into regionals, which will be held in Shoshoni on Friday, May 15. The Cats finished first in the team standings at regionals last year, and stand to repeat the feat again this week. In the girls division, the Lady Cats are expected to finish in the top three in team standings.
When considering "student athletes," Thermopolis is always in a position to brag about the many fine students and athletes that come through Hot Springs County High. The Cats and Lady Cats represent the best the county has to offer - demonstrating both intellectual and physical prowess.
With all those many talents, however, the students are drawn to participate in a great number of school activities - leaving Coach Boone Bowker to face a constant challenge of putting competitive track and field teams together for each week's scheduled meet. "This year regionals will be the first time of the entire season we will have a complete team to compete fully in the meet. It's going to be fun, and there definitely will be some surprises."
The state championships are scheduled for May 21 in Casper.
