Bobcat track competes at Powell

When it comes to statistics, the sport of track and field is not unlike the sport of baseball - in both cases, it’s all about the numbers. The Hot Springs County High School track teams traveled to Powell last week to put up numbers in the various events, all the while, fighting their own reduced numbers.

It probably comes as no surprise that, in a rural community like Thermopolis, we have the benefit of a very large, and highly successful, FFA organization. Many of our high school students participate in that fine institution, and thus, last week, many of the track teams’ components were absent from the field attending the FFA statewide event in Casper. The loss of those teammates, together with some team members who were suffering from illness that was making the rounds, left the Bobcats and Lady Cats with less than half their usual numbers to compete in Powell.

The L. A. Kohnke Invitational in Powell is a large event where most of the teams hail from Class 3A schools. Nevertheless, the Lady Cats team finished 8th out of 10 teams while the Bobcats finished in 7th place out of 12 teams (just a half point behind fourth place Lander Valley).

Davdine King had an outstanding day, finishing fifth in the 100 meter dash (13.25), fourth in the 400 meter dash (1:03.34) and second in the long jump (16-6). Merika Amend placed ninth in the long jump (14-8.5). The Lady Cats finished fifth in the 4X100 meter relay (56.11) with the team of Emsi Miller, Davdine King, Summer Galovich Merika Amend.

Del Dukes finished seventh in the 100 meter dash (11.69), third in the 200 meter dash (24.08) and sixth in the long jump (18-10). Robert Buckner was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 19-2.

Logan Dafoe finished fifth in the 400 meter dash (55.19); and Ryan Arends finished sixth in the 800 meter run (2:14.21). Jacoby Elder finished fifth in the 800 meter run (2:14.15) and seventh in the 1600 meter run (4:58.69). Jadeth Elder finished seventh in the 3200 meter run (11:04.13) and tenth in the 400 meter dash (57.02).

Van Epperson finished seventh in the 300 meter hurdles (46.21), while teammate Stetson Moody finished eighth in that event (46.29) and seventh in the long jump (18-9.5). Cole Keller finished first in the 800 meter run (2:06.56) and second in the triple jump (41-10).

In the 4x100 meter relay, the Bobcat team of Zane Stam, Del Dukes, Nolan Collins Logan Dafoe finished in fourth place with a time of 45.83. Coach, Boone Bowker said, “We threw that group together at the very last minute, and they went out and qualified for state.”

In the 4x400 meter relay, the Cats finished third with Logan Dafoe, Zane Stam, Cole Keller; Moody Stetson and a time of 3:42.95.

In the 1600 sprint medley, the Bobcats finished with a time of 3:52.49, earning second place with the team of Ryan Arends, Logan Dafoe, Jadeth Elder, Cole Keller.

This week the teams will compete in Shoshoni, however, with some sketchy weather rolling in on Thursday, the meet scheduled for that day was moved to Tuesday.
