Lady Cats get win in Lovell

The Hot Springs County High School girls basketball team traveled to Lovell last Friday, for a rematch of an in-conference game against the Lady Bulldogs. In what may have been their best game of the season, the Lady Cats came away with a huge win against a second place team - who came into the weekend with a ten and eight record.

Maggie Landon made her first start on varsity in the contest, while Kamryn Farrell played through a lower body injury suffered earlier in the week. Injury or not, Farrell was unfazed, and finished the game as the team’s top scorer – with ten points, including two three-point shots.

The Lady Bulldogs proved very strong on the offensive glass, however, a tight and focused defense by Thermopolis – led by the fast hands and several steals of Dazlynn Hunt – gave the team from Lovell all they could handle. An excellent joint effort under the glass, provided by Austin Slagle, Davdine King and Ina King, served to thwart Lovell’s game plan of pushing the ball into the paint.

Thermopolis found themselves in foul trouble early in the contest, resulting in foul-outs by Austin Slagle and Dazlynn Hunt by games end. Poor free-throw shooting by the Lady Bulldogs, however, kept the Lady Cats in the game. While the ineffective offense of Lovell certainly aided Thearmopolis, that does not take away anything from the concerted effort of the Lady Cats - in bringing home a great win, against a very good opponent.

The game was a close affair throughout, and with the score tied at thirty-two - with just eighteen seconds left on the scoreboard, Hanna Hill put in the game-winning lay-up for two-points. The Lady Cats then held out for the final six seconds of the game to win by a score of 34 to 32.

Coach Tyler Weinberger said, “That was the best game the girls have played this year. The girls are really progressing in their skill level, and coming together as a team.”

The Lady Cats spread the scoring around. Dazlynn Hunt had 4 points, Maggie Landon had 2 points, Kamryn Farrell had 10 points (including two 3-pointers), Jayssie Owsley had 3 points, Hanna Hill had 9 points, Davdine King had 2 points and Austin Slagle had 4 points.

The Lady Cats will face Worland at home on Thursday, and then Pinedale at home on Saturday. Coach Weinberger, says “Both of those will be tough games, but we are showing that we can play with good teams.”
