On the Record policy

It is the Thermopolis Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police department” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We print the names of all people upon their initial arrest.

Sheriff’s Office

Tuesday, March 3

6:08 p.m. Report of a possible fire in the Kirby area. Officials were not able to locate the origin.

Wednesday, March 4

3:08 p.m. Report of a semi-truck with a flat tire on the side of the road, south of the tunnels of Wind River Canyon. Deputy called for a tow truck.

Friday, March 6

3:21 p.m. Report of an accident at Cowboy Mine Road and Black Mountain Road. Kids ran off-road and over a fence post.

Saturday, March 7

1:03 p.m. Report of a 9-1-1 hang up at Coventry Circle off of Red Lane. Deputy responded and found children playing with a phone and called.

Sunday, March 8

3:23 a.m. Deputy was on regular patrol at mile marker 140 Highway 20 North and observed a truck on the shoulder not running. The driver had hit a deer and was broken down.

Deputy found that the driver was allegedly intoxicated and on supervised probation. Deputy asked to search and items were found in the vehicle.

Urine analysis found the alleged use of a controlled substance. Dalton T. Ammon, 19, of Gillette, was arrested and charged with alleged possession of controlled substance and youth under the influence.

The passenger was given two citations of possession of marijuana and was not arrested. 

Police Department

Wednesday, March 4

12:26 a.m. Report of an alleged intoxicated subject. No arrest was made.

9:53 a.m. A wallet was found at a local business and was returned to its owner.

6:23 p.m. Report of a motorized wheelchair person impeding traffic. They were removed.

Thursday, March 5

1:53 a.m. Report of a person whose tires were slashed on their vehicle by suspects who left the area to another jurisdiction. Those subjects were arrested for another reason and the victim decided to not press charges.

9:18 a.m Melissa E. Balstad, 52, of Thermopolis, was arrested on a probation and parole hold after a house search.

11:15 a.m. Report of an unknown vehicle hitting a breaker box. There was no damage to the box but pieces of the vehicle were left behind. 

11:22 a.m. Police assisted as a civil standby for a tenant to move out of a rental.

2:30 p.m Officer assisted an ambulance transport of a patient to the hospital.

Friday, March 6

1:45 a.m. Report of an alleged intoxicated subject in their own yard. The subject was assisted into the house.

7:40 a.m Nicholas M. Homyak, 26, of Minnesota, turned himself in on a warrant. 

1:09 p.m Officer assisted an ambulance transport of a patient to the hospital.

2:02 p.m. Officer assisted an ambulance transport of a patient to the hospital.

4:44 p.m. Report of a possible drunk driver. The vehicle was parked at the driver’s home before an officer could make contact.

6:12 p.m. Raymond A. McKing, 29, of Arapahoe, was arrested on alleged property destruction, leaving a scene of an accident, driving under the influence, open container and second offense child restraint. 

7:24 p.m Dorene J. Whiting, 54, of Thermopolis, was arrested for alleged possession of marijuana. 

11 p.m. Spencer A. Redland, 23, of Basin, was cited for alleged possession of marijuana, open container and no valid registration.

Saturday, March 7

10:20 a.m. Earlier civil standby requested police assistance again for the removal of additional items from rental.

2:35 p.m. Report of two subjects threatening each other and then separating. Officer was unable to make contact with subjects.

Sunday, March 8

10:51 p.m. Report of a structure fire. Officer responded to assist the fire department.

Albert E. Long,  driving without compulsory auto insurance, first offense, fees and fines $555.

Mick R. Albright, driving while under the influence, 0.08% or more, 90 days jail, 83 days suspended, 6 months supervised probation, fees and fines $455 and interfering with a peace officer, 90 days, 87 suspended, 6 months supervised probation, fees and fines $205.

Ben D. Newburn, possession of a controlled substance, plant, 3 oz or less, 120 days jail, 120 days suspended, 6 months unsupervised probation.
