Veterans Day observances

Veterans Day is observed annually on Nov. 11, honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The date is significant, as the major hostilities of World War I ended formally on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., when the Armistice with Germany became effective.

Unlike Memorial Day, which recognizes those who have died while in military service, Veterans Day honors all who have served.

To recognize the day, and those who served, VFW Post No. 2281 will host a program including Honor Guard and speeches in front of the post building, 302 Broadway.

The post will also be home to a dinner hosted by the VFW Auxiliary, starting at 6 p.m.

Volunteers are requested to help the Big Horn Basin Riders with setting up the Memorial Avenue of Flags at Monument Hill Cemetery at 7 a.m., and taking them down at 4 p.m. The Avenue is an impressive sight with all of the 109 spots filled and flags waving.

Thermopolis Middle School’s student council will host a salute to veterans program beginning at 9 a.m. at the auditorium. Veterans are invited to come to the board room in the auditorium at 8:30 a.m. for coffee with the student council.

During the council’s program, there will be a Quilts of Valor presentation.

The quilts are made by locals, and the recipients are interviewed by students, who then speak about the veterans at the assembly.
