No, it’s not an April Fool’s joke. Starting this past Monday, April 1, Thermopolis is again providing a stop for a bus line. Though it’s been a few years since we had a bus stop here, the general reaction to the news has been positive and there’s hope it will stay.
Marian Lanik, the general manager for the Southside Travel Center where the stop is located, said the official schedule for the bus includes northbound trips from Cheyenne to Billings on Monday and Wednesday, as well as trips from Billings to Cheyenne on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Busses will arrive at Southside at 11 a.m. and depart at 11:15 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, with a stop in Cody and estimated arrival in Billings at 4 p.m. A one-way ticket is $56 per person. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, busses arrive at 10:45 a.m. with an 11 a.m. departure date, with a stop in Casper and estimated arrival in Cheyenne at 4 p.m. A one-way ticket is $83.80 per person.
Make sure to plan for at least a one-day stay when you reach your destinations, as return departures from Billings are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 a.m., and returns from Cheyenne are Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 a.m.
As Thermopolis is the designated meal stop on the route, the bus actually stops here.
Tickets are currently available only online through the bus service, Express Arrow, though Lanik noted there is a possibility there will be a physical ticket agent in town. A representative with the bus service noted there are still some bugs being worked out of the online system and it would be easier for ticket buyers to simply pay with cash when the bus arrives.
Those who show up early will be able to stay inside the business, Lanik said. “We don’t want them to freeze or die of heat stroke while they’re waiting for a bus.” She hopes having the service will get Southside’s name out there a bit more, and as there’s been people asking about the services it will be nice to offer it again.
