Fall drama showcase begins

The Hot Springs County High School Drama Club will be presenting their Fall Showcase this coming week, Nov. 14, 16, and 17 at 7 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.

The students are presenting their design and performance pieces for State Drama Competition.

The designs will be displayed in the auditorium lobby for audience members to look at before and after the performances.

“The rules for State Drama have changed this year by aligning with the International Thespian Festival rules,” said director Mary McGillivray. “This means that there will be a few different categories and performance styles. The students have embraced the new rules and are working hard to meet the requirements.”

The first half of the evening will consist of Varsity level monologues, duets, and musical solos along with Novice level monologues and duets.

After the intermission, the students will also be performing the one act play “Flowers for Algernon,” a science fiction play where a young man named Charlie receives a surgery that had only been performed on mice, to help increase his intelligence.

Charlie discovers how his and the mouse’s life, who is named Algernon, are similar. Charlie has to try to race against time to solve the problem that affects him and Algernon.

In the lobby there will be designs showing fantasy makeup, realistic makeup, lighting, publicity, original script, costume, stage management, sound, and more.

The Drama Club students involved in Fall Showcase are Aaron Hanson, Aime Robinson, Ashley Brawley, Ben Manning, Breeze Petty, Chauncey Morris, Dakota Meier, Deanna Owings, Elizabeth Wagstaff, Emily Anderson, Hannah Hu, Karissa McGarvie-Balstad, Katie Burrows, Krynn McGinty, Kyle Mosser, Lane Randall, Mikayla Lanik, Naomi Bishop, Owen Douglas, Ryan Miller, Ryan Slagle, Savana Meier, Seth Parker, Stormy Cox, Taydee Landrum, and Tyler Kay.

The performances are free to the public but donations are accepted at the door. All donations go to helping the students go to State Drama. Please come and show them your support!
