Bobcat speech season preview

Starting her fourth year as head coach for the Bobcat Speech and Debate team, coach Cindy Glasson is optimistic about this team’s season.

“We have retained all of last years competitors and added a few new faces this season,” she said. “I am excited to get these kids on their feet.”

With the new additions to the team, there will be about 15 students traveling with the team this year, nearly double the members of last year.

“The team really went out and recruited this year,” Glasson said. “All last season they would sit around and discuss eighth graders they thought would be great for the team as well as kids in the other grades. Really, current kids on the team are the best way to get others to join. They already know the ropes and fill the others in.”

Glasson said she ordered a bunch of new plays and pieces for the team this year, hoping to have something fresh for competition.

“I picked up more than a dozen new pieces and there are a few of them I truly feel will be winners this year,” she said. “There is so much talent on this team. All I need to do is get the right pieces in the right hands.”

Glasson is also confident about the debate side of the team saying, “Our debators from last year are back and we’ve picked up a couple more. Debating as a freshman can be intimidating, but last year’s team did well, so I have good expectations for this year, too.”

While the team will not actually start traveling until January, they will be having their home tournament on Saturday, Dec. 9. The Bobcats don’t compete in their own tournament since they are running it, but they are always on the look-out for judges for the home tourney.

Their travel schedule has changed a little bit this year, dropping a couple of tournaments they have historically gone to in favor of a pair of new ones, adding Glenrock and Newcastle to their list.

The State tournament will be held in Lander in March, followed by National Qualifiers in Rock Springs. The National tournament will be held in Florida in June.

The team’s first outing will be the Kelly Walsh tournament, Jan. 12-13. As always, Glasson encourages folks to come to the home tournament to see how things are done and said everyone is welcome to come to any of the tournaments to see the kids.

“They love it when people come to see them,” she said. “We do have a couple of tournaments that are close (Greybull and Worland) near the end of the season, so anyone who wants to see the kids certainly is welcome.”
