Enjoy the water with diligence

The Bureau of Reclamation made the decision earlier this week to up the flow from Boysen Reservoir to 9,000cfs, up from the 8,000cfs for the last week or so.

If you’ve driven through Wind River Canyon you’ve undoubtedly noticed the water is high and the rapids are running swiftly. All you need do is drive over to the State Park and you’ll see a couple of the islands are “missing” and the walkway near the river is flooded in a number of places.

The water at the boat dock below the terraces is so high it’s encroaching on the sidewalks there, as well, and the road is completely covered.

Needless to say, its time to be vigilant around water.

Make sure you keep an eye on children and pets in the park, and if you’re a fisherman in the canyon, be extra cautious of the swift water and be very careful along the banks. Watch your footing and keep an eye on the water.

Along with the high water come mosquitos and the risk of West Nile Virus.

Those nasty little biters are most active at sunrise and near sunset, so if you have plans to be near the water around those times, be sure to bring along your bug spray.

Sprays containing DEET are most effective along with long sleeves and long pants.

Summer is here! Go out and have a great time, just be water aware and mosquito prepared.
