Springtime in Wyoming

We’re dealing with typical “Springtime in Wyoming,” with 80 degrees for two days, rain for three or four, and then the threat of snow before its all over.

Along with that come issues with rocks falling in Wind River Canyon, something we’ve dealt with for generations.

I always hear folks talking about the time when Chimney Rock will come falling down across the road, but for me, I never worry about that.

When my grandmother was young, the canyon was blasted out to create the road and the railway across the river.

I remember her telling me about the blasters who tried, over and over, to get Chimney Rock to fall as the engineers had the same worry we do about it falling over at an inopportune moment.

Well, they couldn’t get it to come down then, so I’m pretty comfortable that it’s not going to come down anytime soon. Of course, Mother Nature has her own time frame, so none of us really knows.

However, I am hopeful it remains in place. After all, that is when we know we’re “home.” How many times have you come back through the canyon after a long trip, saw Chimney Rock and knew you were just about there?

When I moved back from California, it wasn’t seeing the sign for “Wonderful Wyoming” that let me know I was where I belonged, it was the sight of Chimney Rock as I came around the corner.

For now, please, everyone be cautious driving through the canyon. We’ve got more rain on the way and you never know when one of those rocks may decide its spent its last night high on the precipice.
