Home and garden workshop May 4

Hot Springs County Extension service will be hosting a home and garden workshop for residents of Hot Springs County on Thursday, May 4 in the meeting room at Big Horn Federal.

Beginning at 5:30, Barton Stam will welcome everyone to the event and pass things on to Tina Russell who will give folks tips on attracting pollinators to your yard and garden.

While we often see crop rotation on large farms, did you ever think about doing it with your garden plot? Jeremiah Vardiman will be on hand to show you how.

Once you’ve harvested your crop, what do you do with all those fresh veggies? Phyllis Lewis will tell you how to use steam and water bath canning methods to ensure your harvest lasts and is safe to eat.

Rather than purchasing new seeds every year, Mae Smith will teach attendees how to save seeds from this year’s crop to plant next year, saving money and ensuring you get good, fresh seeds for planting.

Who doesn’t love strawberry shortcake? Chris Hilgert will be there to teach you everything you need to know about strawberries, from when and where to plant to how to get the best harvest yet.

The biggest part of getting a bumper crop from your garden, however, is having the right soil to begin with. Caitlin Youngquist can tell you just what to do when you have a soil test done.

Light refreshments will be served and the workshop is free to the public.
