Wrestlers head to Pavillion

The Bobcat wrestling team had a very successful weekend in Douglas at the Shane Shatto Memorial tournament.

“They wrestled tough,” coach CJ Scholl said. “The varsity wrestled their hearts out. They went in with a ‘refuse to lose’ mentality.

“Our JV wrestlers went into the meet with a chip on their shoulder. Coach Smith had them all fired up.”

Scholl said there were 19 wrestlers this weekend, three on the varsity squad and 16 wrestling JV.

Koy Myers placed fifth in the 145 lb. class and Cullen Becher took sixth in the 160 lb. bracket for the varsity squad.

On the JV side, Jon Harvey placed first in 152 along with Jon Hagen at 126 lbs.

Five matmen brought home second place finishes: Jeffery VanAntwerp at 138 lbs., Chase White at 126, Blake Williams at 113, Hunter Mounts at 132 and Michael Harvey at 170.

Andrew Yarbrough placed fourth at 220 lbs. along with Aidan Ozmon at 132.

Tyson Tobar brought home fifth in the 182 lb. class and Josh Lackey took sixth at 106.

Eric Bleak (138) and Tyler Kay (152) both placed eighth.

Coming up next weekend for the Cats is the Don Runner tournament in Pavillion, a primarily 2A competition.

“Its still tough,” Scholl said. “We have to go in with a little different mentality for this one. We are going to be one of the toughest teams there and its mostly varsity. Some of our JV wrestlers will need to step it up to earn one of those varsity spots.”

The tournament begins Friday at 11 a.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.
