Cross Country sees another strong finish

Coming off some amazing accomplishments at the Worland Invite Sept. 22, the Cross Country Bobcats are showing no signs of slowing down, as the high school girls team beat out Cody, Powell, Lander, Riverton, Worland and Buffalo to take first on their home turf with 40 points Saturday at the Bobcat Invite.

The girls had three finishers in the top ten, with Jules Ward in first with a time of 19:48.03, McKenna Bomengen in second with 21:36 and Tahja Hunt in eighth with 22:26.81.

Ward also had a big personal record on the course, as well as seniors Stacy Lewis, who took 16th with 23:50.59, and Liz Rhodes who took 40th with 27:23. In comparison, their 2015 times were: Ward, 20:47; Lewis 24:25; and Rhodes 27:40.

Coach Brenna Abel was also proud of the strength and confidence of the freshmen girls Bomengen and Hunt, as well as Olivia Weyer - who had a season personal record, coming in 13th with a time of 23:22.75 - Aime Robinson, who placed 29th with 25:41.91, and Erica Meier, who placed 32nd with 26:15.97.

On the middle school side, Hallie Martinez broke the top 10 - a first for Thermopolis Middle School this year - taking fifth place with a time of 13:13. The middle school conference meet for the Big Horn Basin will be in Powell Friday.

Abel stated it was a great day for the Bobcats. The local course, she noted, is a challenging, hilly one, and the kids "really did rise to the occasion." Cross country is sort of a unique sport, Abel stated, as each course is different in its own way.

The runners will next compete at Powell, at the Powell golf Course, on Oct. 7. Races are scheduled for: MS Girls, 3 p.m.; MS Boys, 3:30 p.m.; HS Girls, 4 p.m.; and HS Boys, 4:30 p.m.

Additional results from the meet include:

Varsity Boys - Sean Miller, 27th, 20:38.38

MS Boys - Spencer Calhoun, 66th, 14:59.18; Ryan Miller, 75th, 15:17.81; Karsten Hart, 88th, 16:23.44; and Josiah Butler, 95th, 17:01

MS Girls - Sadie Jo Burr, 18th, 14:05; Jasmine Collins, 37th, 14:54; Dayna Sandberg, 43rd, 15:09; and Lexi Overfield, 65th, 16:24.
