Get your chalk on during Second Friday ArtStroll

The Second Friday ArtStroll in downtown Thermopolis, Sept. 9, 5-8 p.m. will feature chalk art on the sidewalks. Chalk art promoter Toddi Darlington invites the public to join her in to draw a picture or write your name during the third annual Get Your Chalk On ArtStroll. Darlington is a member of the Smoking Waters Art Guild. “I love helping to organize the strolls, but my real passion lies with the art activities. There is nothing more fun or gratifying than seeing a child’s face light up after making a piece of art. Art is creative, fun and can help a person find ways to communicate expressions and feelings.” Darlington is not a chalk artist but loves the fact that anyone, any age, can pick up a piece of chalk and create art.

Chalk will be available in containers along the sidewalks beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6. Bring your design and join the fun as Smoking Waters Art Guild members and others draw designs on the sidewalks now through Still Strolling Saturday, Sept. 10.

This month’s Second Friday ArtStroll and Still Strolling Saturday features artists, live music, refreshments and door prizes. Most downtown businesses are open during the event.

Chalk is the theme and there will be many chalk activities to participate in Friday evening and Saturday. Stroll by the Hot Springs County Museum Friday evening for the Chalk Art Make It And Take It paper drawing.

Stephanie Conrad and Stefanie Gilbert will be demonstrating Chalk Paint Friday evening and of course, you can be a featured artist with your own chalk art drawing on the sidewalk.

This month’s featured artist is Rodney Skenandore. Rodney Skenandore, Elk Chief was born in Montana. After serving in the Army in Europe, and later in Southeast Asia, he earned a BA in Engineering Design and Drafting from a design school in Denver. He then worked for NASA. He slowly developed his interest in art and has created many works in various media, including design, jewelry, wood carving, stone sculptures, furniture and music writing.  Since the late 1990s, he has concentrated more on the art and his task as a healer for Mother Earth, nature and humans and as a spiritual teacher. Skenandore considers “all of life as an art, a way of being dedicated to the positive spirits of life and healing.” He and his wife, Gudrun, recently moved to Thermopolis and have joined the Smoking Waters Art Guild.

Flying Eagle Gallery is the host business for the evening and will have an opening reception Friday evening for Claudia Augustin, a photographer and multi-media artist. Her artwork will be on display during the month of September. Augustin serves as an officer of the Smoking Waters Art Guild. Strollers are encouraged to pick up a map at any stroll business to find the location of artists and musicians. Return the map to the host business at the end of Friday evening’s stroll to be entered to win a piece of artwork donated by the artists.

Cindy Toth returns to the stroll with new textile items. Other textile artists along the stroll path include Joyce Fletcher, Jane Oldridge and Andrea Linn. Mary Bell Frix will have organic skin care products available.
