Working with faith in mind and heart

Ronald J. Dempsey arrived in Thermopolis about two weeks ago with an agenda - to help others. Some might have already seen Dempsey working around town doing various jobs; he provides the work at no cost to individuals, so long as they provide the materials.

Dempsey said he sees a lot of people that might need jobs done, and he is here to provide the labor. Guided by his faith, he believes that in doing work for people with a full and open heart, the Lord will meet his needs. Scripture speaks to doing work for others, Dempsey said, noting the work Amish people do for their neighbors and friends.

A Vietnam veteran and Navy Corpsman with the Marines, Dempsey served in the military from 1972-76. He also attended school at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Scottsdale, Ariz. When he came to town, he was offered the position of chef from Thermopolis Café and Days Inn; he chose the latter, as it also provided a place for him to stay. Outside the work at the hotel is when he provides free labor.

Dempsey explained his path to Thermopolis was faith-guided. He was living in San Antonio, Texas, he said, when God spoke to him and told him to leave the city. He noted he has provided free work in other areas, and it's something he's been doing for about 30 years. It began when he found himself praying because of a challenge in finding work; he was told simply to do the work and God would provide.

God has even provided a place for him to buy skins to make buckskin clothes, a hobby of his. About the only thing not provided, but something Dempsey's always wanted, is a log and stone home, which he plans to save for.

When working for free, he said, the work comes easier and he often finds himself singing and laughing all day. He further added he's not concerned about what he gets paid, or when he gets to the next job, which allows him to do better work.

Among his skills, Dempsey can do painting, remodeling and some carpentry. He noted he does not want to do work that violates codes, and he doesn't want to step on anyone's toes. Rather, he would like to form cooperatives with other tradesmen so if there is ever a job he can't do he knows who to recommend.
