Wrestlers qualify in top eight at Worland

The busy Bobcat matmen engaged eight dual opponents in three days losing in Greybull Thursday and competing at Worland's Battle of the Bighorns dual tourney on Friday and Saturday. Billings entries, Senior and Skyview, led the tourney and scorched the Bobcats to the tune of 147-12.

However, qualifying at the 16 team tourney among the top eight teams, the Cats were 3-2 against the other five winning over Jackson 48-23, Wheatland 39-23 and Riverton 42-40 while dropping duals to Worland 48-30 and Sheridan 62-15.

The most exciting dual of the young season was with host Worland in the last dual of 2015. The scoring went back and forth until the 195 lb. wt. class where Thermopolis ran out of wrestlers and had to forfeit three matchs (18 pts.) to make the final score 48-30.

The Becher brothers gave notice over the long weekend that they will become a force to reckon with. Older brother Cullen, a sophomore, finished his work with a 4-2 record while Ethan, a freshman, was 4-4. Five of their eight victories were via pins.

Another freshman, Chandler Maddock, earned increasing credibility earning a 4-3 record in the usually tough 138 lb. class with three pins.

Sophomore Milton Peden wrestled to a 4-3 record with all his victories coming via pins. Superior strength seems to be a hallmark for the Bobcat as he hones his wrestling technique.

Other Bobcats recording wins over the busy weekend were Austin Ireland, Jon Hagen, Louie Castle, Chase White, Koy Myers and Tyson Tabar.

Coach C.J. Scholl had plenty of highs and lows. Distinctly dissatisfied with his teams performance at Greybull in their 51-27 loss with only two victories on the mat, he was positive about the Bobcat's comeback on Friday winning 3 of 4 duals to qualify for the gold team bracket.

His smile was not hidden as he said, "Yes, we had a good day Friday. We suffered on Saturday from a lack of depth and the inability to fill the upper weights. Its hard to start 18 pts. behind against good teams, but this team is coming together and will continue to show improvement as the season goes on."

Wrestling action will resume after New Year's at the Douglas Invitational, Jan. 8-9.
