Cornwell named to Wyoming Super 25

shed for 1,329 yards this season, was named to the Wyoming Super 25 team, an all-star team compiled of players from every division in Wyoming high school football.

Cornwell, who was a staple of the Bobcats run-heavy offense over the last three years, averaged over 1,000 yards a season his sophomore, junior, and senior years.

"I've been working for it for a long time," said Cornwell of his honor. "I'm very thankful that I got it."

Last year, his junior year at Hot Springs County High School, he was named to the Super 25 second team.

"I was one vote away from making the first team. It was on my mind all season," he said.

Cornwell's award was a fitting culmination of his high school football career. He refers to his freshman year as his "learning year," and although he played varsity on both offense and defense, he did not make the impact he did later in his career.

His sophomore year was a "huge change," for the Bobcats star, as the team switched to a more run-heavy offense. His junior year was much the same, averaging a hair over 1,000 yards a season.

This last year, however, Cornwell was often the make-or-break variable for the Bobcats. Pressure for the running back was at an all-time high.

"I knew I had a job to do," he said, "I went in there thinking I could get the job done, like in the Big Horn game," he added, referencing one of his most impressive performances.

In the Bobcats homecoming matchup against the Rams, Big Horn scored 26 unanswered points on the board in the first half as Cornwell was held to a mere 31 yards. Although the Bobcats fell 24-26 that night, Cornwell was crucial in the second half, finishing the game with 195 yards and leading the Bobcats charge that almost swung the game in their favor.

Although Cornwell has been a crucial fixture on the Bobcats lineup, he was quick to admit that he was a member of a team, and his success would not have been possible without his teammates.

Cornwell noted that fellow seniors Eric Herold, Cody Bjorhus, JD Phillips, and Cameron Igou were integral to not only his performances, but the performance of the team as well. The group has been playing football together since they were teammates in the Pee-wee league.

Cornwell will be participating in both basketball and track during his senior year. Although he will not participate in basketball in college, he will be talking to recruiters during the rest of his high school career to explore options for a track or football career in college.

Cornwell, along with other Wyoming Super 25 team members, was honored at a ceremony Friday evening at the Ramkota Hotel in Casper. Each player was recognized and presented with a trophy.

This was the 25th year of the Wyoming Super 25.
