Bobcats seeking first win of the season at Wright

The Bobcats of Hot Springs County High School were bested by the Wheatland Bulldogs 55-0 on Friday night, the second straight loss for the Bulldogs this season.

Although the score suggests a one-sided game, the teams were fairly matched throughout the game. Unlike the Bobcats, however, Wheatland was able to convert on big plays and convert on crucial third downs, leading to a constant stream of touchdowns.

Wheatland's scoring started early in the game. After the Bobcat's first possession stalled in Wheatland territory, the Bobcats' punt was returned the entirety of the field for a touchdown. Although the Bobcats were able to block the extra point attempt, there was no looking back for visitor Wheatland.

The Bobcats run-heavy offence stalled against a rock-solid Wheatland defense that has, in the first two games of the season, not allowed their opponent a single touchdown. Wheatland, who currently stand at second place in the Wyoming 2A East standings, are undefeated and have scored a whopping 102 points during their first two games.

"Our kids played hard but Wheatland is a good football team with a lot of experience and depth," said football coach Rob Anderson. "This was a game that we had some injuries and a lot of our younger kids got some great experience playing at a higher level."

First place in the division is held by Newcastle, who have played three games and stand at 2-1. Wheatland will host Newcastle at home next weekend for the top spot in the division.

The Bobcats next game is against Wright, who hold a similar position in the 2A East standings at 0-2, with 0 points for and 72 points against during their first two games of the season.

Friday's game, which was held on the 14th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, featured a moment of silence held before the pledge of allegiance and kickoff.
