A Call to Prayer

America has now reached a very dangerous crossroads, a time in history far more treacherous than during our civil war. For the very first time since the founding of this nation, we and our Constitution are betrayed by all three branches of our federal government: executive, legislative, and judicial. I write this as Kim Davis, a County Clerk in Kentucky, sits in a jail cell, imprisoned by our legal system when she should have been protected by it. She could very well be America’s first political prisoner, jailed for her beliefs. I sincerely hope she is also our last.

Since when does the United States Supreme Court create new rights “out of the firmament,” instead of performing its role of simply determining constitutionality? And since when does such a new right outweigh one that is specifically enumerated in the Constitution? Ms. Davis’ arrest means that we now have a religious test for public officials, something the Constitution specifically prohibits.

For the record, there is no law requiring same-sex marriage. There is only a U.S. Supreme Court decision. The standing “law of the land” today is the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which has been in effect for sixteen years. And yet this law is one of several that our president and his attorneys general have arrogantly refused to enforce.

This issue is not about homosexuality, and in all honesty it isn’t even about same-sex marriage. It is about lawlessness. We are a nation of laws, but for too long we have been allowing certain laws to be ignored. In any system of government based upon the rule of law, such behavior cannot be tolerated for long.

The prophet Daniel tells us the story of Nebuchadnezzar, the great king who commanded all his subjects to bow down and worship a golden statue of himself. Today we have been given a new statue, and are commanded to bow before it. Those who refuse must face dire consequences.

We will not bow down to this golden statue. America, it is time to pray for the survival of our Republic. To those who have never before been praying men or women, we suggest that this might be a good time to start.
